James leads Pembroke boxers in Welsh Championships

Pembroke Amateur Boxing Club continues to make a name for itself at the highest levels in Wales as coaches Nathan Probert and Andy Edmondson recently had no fewer than four of their talented youngsters competing at the Welsh Championships and also had a British Champion following on a few weeks later.

Leading the way

Leading the way was James Probert, now ranked in Europe and showing he has retained his form after making a straight entry through the preliminaries and semi-finals because opponents dropped out. He met Sonny Riley (Llandudno) in the final and won very comfortably, qualifying him for the British Championships, where he was chosen as the Welsh team captain.

James met Alex McCormack (Scotland) in the semis and gave his opponent a boxing lesson – and the same thing happened in the final against Ryan Hall (England), where he was the clear-cut winner.

His reward is selection for the four-man Welsh team to travel to compete against the Ukraine and he is currently in a training camp at the National Sports Centre prior to adding another big competition to his CV as a boxer who is definitely one to watch for the future.

Great performances from newcomers

Ryan Christopher also reached the finals after a great performance against Samuel Duclery (Gilfach) but lost narrowly to John-Paul Wilson (Llandudno), who went on to win a gold medal in the British Finals.

William Price also caught the eye with his best performance before just missing out against peter Robinson (Valleys) – and Charlie Stewart showed up well in his first Welsh Finals before he was also edged out on points by Fancy Stranati (Newport).
