Haverfordwest are crowned Welsh indoor cricket champs!
Haverfordwest Cricket Club are the newly-crowned kings of Welsh indoor cricket after they fended off the challenge of other area champions in Ynysygerwyn, Newport and Pantmawr in an action-packed day of indoor cricket.

Ably led by Danny Potter, the combined skills of Simon Holliday, Ben Field, Nigel Delaney, Huw Scriven and AJ Revu were enough to give The Town the silverware and the chance to progress even further in the national completion.

Semi Final One - Haverfordwest (115 for 4) beat Ynysygerwyn (83 all out)

Haverfordwest elected to bat first against Ynysygerwyn and although their big guns failed to fire they had excellent innings from ‘Mr Reliable’ Nigel Delaney (seven threes and a four in his 31 not out) and Huw Scriven (eight threes and a four in his undefeated 33.

AJ Revu chipped in with 20 late runs and The THaverfordwest are crowned Welsh indoor cricket champs!own would have been pleased with their final tally of 115 for 4 as Alex McCormack was the pick of the Ynysygerwyn bowlers with 2 for 27.

Ynysygerwyn made a steady start via Nicky Maggs (10) and Adam Davies (17) but both departed with the score on 33.

Alex McCormack (10) and Craig N Evans (22) took the score to 71 but took six overs to do it as Danny Potter led Haverfordwest by example with 2 for 15 in three tight overs – and two late run outs as the Haverfordwest fielding paid off, saw Ynysygerwyn dismissed for 83 with only three balls left as AJ Revu and Delaney also bowled similarly miserly spells.

Semi Final Two: (Pantmawr 100 for 3) lost to Newport (101 for 2)

Haverfordwest are crowned Welsh indoor cricket champs!Newport showed what a powerful batting line-up they had as they chased down Pantmawr’s score with over an over and two wickets to spare.

Danny Hay retired on 27 for Pantmawr and there were other useful undefeated scores from Robin Dyson (25) and Lewis Maudant (19) as Alex Mclean (2 for 27) was the most successful Newport bowler.

Newport batted sensibly in response and their cause was certainly helped by the fact that Pantmawr conceded 23 wides in their total of 27 from ‘Mr Extras’!

Skipper Mike Clayden, who has played for Glamorgan Seconds retired on 27 and there was 26 from another highly experienced batsman in Kalu Laverock as Maudant (1 for 23) and Adil Malik (1 for 28) were the successful Pantmawr bowlers.

Third and Fourth Place Play Off –Ynysygerwyn (60 all out) beat Pantmawr (41 all out)

Bowlers were definitely on top in the play-off for third and fourth places as Ynysygerwyn were shot out for only 60 in six overs but still managed to win by 19 runs as they hustled out Pantmawr for a paltry 41 from 7.1 overs!

Ynysygerwyn’s low score still owed almost everything to Gren Davies (three fours and a six in his 26, with only Alex McCormack (13) managing double figures as Malik caused chaos, with a 3 for 10 haul, all of them in his second over.

But Pantmawr crashed as only opening bat Robin Dyson (20) and another haul of 17 extras, most of them wides, as their other batsmen, including former Lawrenny run-maker Johnny Mathias, struggled against Adam Davies (2 for 7), Craig N Evans and Craig R Evans, sharing only four runs between the five of them!

Final: Haverfordwest (113 for 4) beat Newport (89 all out)

Haverfordwest maintained their attacking policy of batting first and Simon Holliday set the bar high before he retired, again assisted by Nigel Delaney (run out for 21) and Scriven (who defied a hamstring pull to bat with a runner and end up with 16 not out to set Newport a challenging, but not daunting target.

Holliday showed his batting prowess with an excellent 49 not out as he returned late on to end up with a big score, including a vital 19 runs in one over from Phil Maclean, and a tally of eight fours and two sixes.

Then The Town fielders blocked boundaries well in support of their bowlers, with good catches from Potter, Revu and finally Holliday as only skipper Clayden stayed long for Newport against Reve (2 for 12), Delaney (1 for 16), Holliday 91 for 29) and Potter (who finished with 2 for 28, including the key wicket of Clayden (36).

Harry Powell also hit 28 but finally fell as last man to Revu, caught by Holliday, and Danny Potter collected the silverware from Welsh Indoor Cricket organiser Trevor Jones.

It means that The Town will now take on the Herefordshire champions in the next stage of the competition that ends at Lord’s, this match to be played in three weeks’ time, again at the Meads Leisure Centre, Milford Haven.
