Great turnout in memory of Owain
Fishguard & Goodwick RFC 95 - Cardiff Saracens 14
The huge crowd who turned out at The Moors last Saturday was proof of the esteem in which the late Owain Jones was held as Fishguard & Goodwick played a special memorial match against Cardiff Saracens,
Owain had started out with The Seagulls and was a very popular member of The Saracens when he moved to Cardiff, as was evidenced by the enormous turn-out from the club for this special game that was also attended by his family and many other friends.
The game was held over four quarters and well refereed by Matthew Evans, with everyone then travelling up to the Fishguard & Goodwick RFC Clubhouse in West Street, Fishguard, to further celebrate the special life of someone taken so young.
Seagulls strong at the start
The first quarter saw The Seagulls, who were able to include almost all of their first team squad leading 14-0 with tries from winger Thomas George and full back Robbie Jones, both converted by Mark Jones.
The Saracens also had their chances and eventually managed their first converted try through Brian Wheeler so that the half-time score moved to 35-7 thanks to further Seagull tries through George, Centre Sion Rowlands and No 10 Jones, who clearly had his kicking boots on as he landed all three conversions.
Fast and furious pace
As both teams made regular changes from a fast and furious pace enjoyed by very supportive onlookers, the homesters increased the tempo with winger Osian Jones, centre Rhys Evans and scrum half Andrew Williams getting on the scoresheet. Thomas George duly completed his hat-trick and good work up front by The Saracens saw James Webb cross for a deserved converted try.
As well as the regular squad, The Seagulls also had Blayne John, Panda Waddup and Lorenzo Giacci involved and they added a further six tries in the final quarter from Liam Wilkes, Rowlands, Ryan Foot, Kyle Keane and Ed Bendall (2).
Lovely thoughts from Min
After the game, Seagulls' team manager Meinir ‘Min’ Walsh told PembrokeshireSport.co.uk, “It was a wonderful day in memory of someone special and it was brilliant to see almost 50 players turn out and so many people in attendance, especially so many of Owain’s family on what was a bitter sweet day.”
“We would like to thank Cardiff Saracens for their huge part in the day and all our players for their terrific support.
“In the final analysis the result was inconsequential but there is no doubt that The Saracens will be eager to redress the balance next season because after the success of this match both teams will be eager to make it an annual event in memory of a very popular young man!”
