Haverfordwest County scored twice in the second half to secure a hard fought victory against third from bottom Cwmamman United at the Counygar Bridge Meadow.

With league leaders Llanelli Town winning 3-1 at Ton Pentre on Friday night, Sean Cresser’s Bluebirds picked up three valuable points, as they are sitting in second spot just points behind The Reds.

The visitors were unlucky not to lead at half time, as Ashley Curtis’ stinging shot struck Conah McFenton’s wordwork.

Carroll breaks deadlock

However after the break the Bluebirds finally broke the deadlock in the 55^th minute with a superb goal. Left back Spencer Williams intelligently passed to Declan Carroll on the edge of the 18 yard area, quick feet and a cracking left foot strike saw the ball fly past Chris Curtis into the top corner.

Tim Hicks played superbly at the back for the home outfit, the centre back showing a cool head when others were fly hacking the ball anywhere. Skipper Sean Pemberton was rock solid and Spencer Williams acquitted himself well at left back, and Matthew Broome worked hard at right back.

Speake scores

The Bluebirds grabbed a second goal on the 71 minute mark; a free kick in the box fell kindly to Kristian Speake who drilled his left footed effort into the bottom corner to give his team some breathing space.

But within two minutes the visitors pulled a goal back, when some slack marking allowed United substitute Colin Harris to slot past McFenton from eight yards out.

There was a tense finish with the Bluebirds hanging on for another valuable win, possibly the first of many in 2018!
