National Village Cup – Last 16 match

Carew (138 for 6) beat Barby CC (137 all out) by four wickets

Umpire: Dai Morris
Scorer: Julie Davies

Ian Sefton drivesCarew took on Barby CC, the current leaders of the Warwickshire League Division One and marched in to the last eight of the National Village Cup competition as reward for an excellent all-round performance against a very experienced opposition which has only lost two of its 13 league games.

They bowled and fielded really well to restrict the visitors to 137 all out in 37 overs and then took just one ball more to chase down their target for the loss of only six wickets.

James Hinchliffe got Carew off to an excellent start as he shifted three of the top Barby batsmen in a nine-over spell that earned him figures of 3 for 39 as he took a good return catch to get rid of opener Dan Dury and was assisted by skipper Rhys Davies in removing the Barby top scorer David Watson for 47 (5ive fours and two sixes from 45 balls), and by Luke Hicks in shifting James Wynn Evans for just a single.

Good bowling and catching helps Carew's cause

At the other end, another Carew youngster in Iori Hicks trapped Chris Crag for 15 and the dangerous Tom Cleghorn as Ceri Brace was perfectly placed to take the catch – with Hicks ending his six-over stint with creditable figures of 2 for  17 and Brace as the other wicket-taker with a 2 for 22 analysis from nine overs.

Rhys Davies takes a catchJoel Cleghorn showed why he is Barby captain with a gritty 38 which contained only one boundary as he ‘dropped anchor’ before he was clean bowled by opposing captain Rhys Davies, who utilised his young bowling attack well alongside taking that key wicket.

Nick Scourfield raised the Carew momentum with a wonderful left-handed low boundary catch to help Tom Davies end with 1 for 23 to limit Barby’s final tally.

Sefton and Scourfield start well for Carew

Ian Sefton (37) and Tom Scourfield (19) gave Carew a steady start before both were shifted by Joel Gleghorn – and Nicky Scourfield didn’t stay long against Craig Scott.

But Brian Hall (23) and Tom Davies (33) put Carew within sniffing distance with some really sensible batting before both were removed by Will Sinclair and although Lewis Hicks also departed early it was left to skipper Rhys Davies and Luke Hicks to score the few runs needed for victory and keep the Carew’ adventure going in the National Village Competition!
