Borderettes are back in action at Whitland

Borderettes are back in action at WhitlandWhitland RFC Ladies start the 2014-15 season in somewhat of an unusual position where the team were outright winners of the championship last season, gaining automatic promotion to the Premiership – but in an unknown twist they will now also be joined by other championship teams Gwernyfed and Pencoed, due to a reshuffle of the leagues.

These additions now make the premiership a group of seven teams, Skewen (formally Neath Athletic), Pontyclun, Llandaff North, Seven Sisters, Gwernyfed, Pencoed and Whitland. The league group was decided on after last year’s super cup competition, meaning the Borderettes were in third place after a very successful cup competition, Whitland in the end lost the semi final to premiership veterans Pontyclun, after giving the Falcons a shock and leading the game at half time.

Seniors underpinned by
youth and junior teams

Whitland ladies will this season boast not only a premiership ladies team but also an under 15s and under under18s team for the first time in the current ladies’ section 10-year history. “For the senior team to continue to be a success we have to underpin the team with junior teams,” said a club spokesperson.

The senior team will once again be managed by Suzanne Davies who instigated all of the current teams, whilst Meinir and Paul Walsh, of Fishguard, will continue to coach the team and rack up the miles in their car; this season however they will be joined by the fresh face of Dan Mason, who will gain from all the experience in the team.

Suzanne Davies said,
"It was a successful season for both the senior and under 15s team, so we look forward to the addition of an under 18s team to the group this season. The girls now have a clear path from under 15s to senior rugby in one club and this can only lead to positive things.

Whitland ladies will start training at 10am on Sunday 3rd August at Parc Dr Owen – and for more information on ladies’ or girls’ rugby at Whitland RFC please contact Suzanne Davies on 07969455382.
