Haverfordwest Ladies 17 - Pencoed Phoenix 7

 
Haverfordwest Ladies RFC got the new season off to a winning start on Sunday with a hard fought home win against Pencoed. 
 
There were five new faces in the side after some experienced players hung up their boots at the end of last season, and they performed well against very physical opponents – and Sunday also saw one of the team's founders Clodagh Llewhellin bow out, and she did so with a performance typical of the incredibly fit flanker. 
 

Blues on top in first half – and defend well afterwards

 
Haverfordwest scored all their points in the first half with Cardiff Blues forward Awen Prysor and debutant scrum half Rhian Swift crossing for tries, whilst Joanna Price converted both efforts, before adding a penalty later on.
 
Pencoed responded well after the break and were dominant in the scrum, but Haverfordwest, who were unable to play their brand of running rugby, defended well before Pencoed were rewarded with their efforts in the final play of the game with a converted try.
 
The man of the match was Awen Prysor. 
 

Coaches have a solid base to build on

Speaking after the game, Haverfordwest coach Chris Beggan said: "The result was a very rewarding outcome after a tough pre-season. 
 
"It has given both myself and fellow coach Gareth Charles a list of things to work on, but I know this new group of girls are keen to keep pushing themselves harder and raise the standards for our next fixture."
