Haverfordwest Ladies' promotion hopes were dealt a major blow on Sunday after they were beaten at home by a single point against promotion rivals Ynysybwl.

Both teams were undefeated in division two ahead of the game, with a win for Haverfordwest guaranteeing promotion - they made a good start with captain Nina Colville crossing for a try and Joanna Price converting.

Ynysybwl kept in touch with a successful penalty to limit Haverfordwest to a 7-3 interval lead.

‘Bwl come out fighting after the break

It was the visitors who came out fighting in the second half, with a series of pick and drives resulting in a try but Haverfordwest responded immediately with a Delyth Foster try, with Price again adding the extra two points.

But that effort was cancelled out when a determined Ynysybwl powered over the line for their second try of the game.

Too little too late as visitors hold on

Haverfordwest fought back in the dying minutes, but it proved too little too late for the home team, who looked out of sorts and failed to play much of their brand of rugby.

Haverfordwest coach Gareth Charles said the result was "up there with one of the most disappointing rugby days" he has ever experienced.

Haverfordwest do have the chance to redeem themselves on May 15 when the fixture is repeated at Ynysybwl, with the winners taking the league title and promotion.
