Alec Colley Cup – Quarter Final Round-up - 2018

Jack’s innings a key factor in Whitland success

Whitland 2nds (110 for 4) beat St Ishmaels 2nds (105 for 8) by 6 wickets

Jack Bowen A boundary-laden innings of 58 not out from Jack Bowen was a key factor in Whitland Seconds’ success over their opposition from St Ishmaels, allied to an equally positive performance with the ball from his brother Connor.

Connor’s 4 for 25 haul alongside tight spells by Wayne Howells (1 for 17), Ben Harvey (2 for 25) and Iestyn Scourfield (1 for 28) restricted Tish to 105 for 8 as only Kevin L Bowen (32), Robbie Thomas (19) and Mike Cockburn (14) managed double figures.

It was thought unlikely to a challenging chase for Whitland and that is the way it turned out as Staff James rapped 33 runs and Jack Bowen’s undefeated knock saw Whitland home despite good Tish bowling by Kevin L Bowen (2 for 32) and Ieuan Hawkins (2 for 17).

Carew’s big score too much for Llangwm

Llangwm 2nds (125 for 9) lost to Carew 2nds (193 for 4) by 68 runs

Luke Hicks A powerful innings of 88 not out by Luke Hicks made sure of Carew’s place in the last four at Pill Parks as The Rooks final tally of 193 for 4 always seemed a little too high for a Llangwm side which nevertheless gave chase but were restricted by tight Carew bowling.

Hicks’ big hitting was supported by skipper Dai Rees (31), Brian Hall (18 not out) and Morgan Grieve (14 not out) as the main Llangwm bowlers were Andrew Harries (2 for 45) and Gary Phillips (2 for 42).

Phillips (31) and Harries (22) also featured with the bat for Llangwm with support from Martyn Thomas (26) and Jonathan Twigg (13) but they lost key wickets at important times and in the final analysis Carew were worthy winners and will now take on Whitland in the semi-final.

Nitin leads Town into semis

Haverfordwest 2nds (157 for 5) beat Lawrenny 2nds (113 for 8) by 44 runs

Umpires: Arthur Brady & Dave Brandon
Scorers: Kelly Williams and Dai Jones

Nitin Mathias A fine innings of 72 by Nitin Mathias helped Haverfordwest Seconds into the semi-finals at the expense of their counterparts from Lawrenny, who battled hard all the way as a 71 partnership from Andrew Cole and Jack Tucker gave them the sniff of a chance but when both departed it was The Town who won by a comfortable margin.

Mathias struck seven fours and two sixes before he was caught seeking another boundary but with Dai Davies (20), Josh Hicks (14) and skipper Chris Phillips (26 not out) all providing support their final tally of 157 for 5 wickets was a challenging one.

For Lawrenny there was tight bowling by Steve Cole (1 for 29) and Tucker (1 for 25) whilst Tom Cole claimed 1 for 46) and Adrian Harries was a little more expensive with 1 for 56.

The visitors then lost early wickets to 13 year old Evan Watts (1 for 28) and experienced campaigner Clive Tucker before Andrew Cole (six fours in his 40) and Tucker (39, including four fours and a six) smashed the ball around The Racecourse.

But good bowling by Sanjay Gurong (2 for 29) and Phillips (2 for 20) really applied the brakes to Lawrenny’s progress and there was only going to be one winner in the final stages of an entertaining tussle.

Cresselly cruise to comfortable win

Cresselly 2nds (79 for 1) beat Burton Seconds (78 all out) by 9 wickets

Neal WilliamsUmpires: Trefor Evans & Dave Bonner
Scorer: Janice Webb

Cresselly Seconds have a very experienced squad and this was very much in evidence as they dismissed Burton for 78 runs and then reached their target with nine wickets and overs aplenty to spare.

Leading the way for Burton in the batting stakes was old war horse Richard Hayman, who scored 18 runs alongside Matthew Davies (15) but the varied home attack of Lyn Richards (3 for 21), Matthew Lewis (3 for 21) and Sam Harts (3 for 15) made sure that no-one else stayed long enough to create an impact.

Cresselly lost Scott Arthur, adjudged lbw to Dan Ridge (1 for 20) but then Welsh Vets’ opener Neal Williams lead the Cresselly reply with an unbeaten 44 alongside Matthew Webb’s 15 not out – and their reward is a semi-final appearance against Haverfordwest.
