Pembrokeshire Football celebrates special junior recognition
FAW Trust McDonalds National Grassroots Football Awards:
Venue: Friday 16th November, Cardiff City Stadium
Congratulations to St Florence Girls FC and Fishguard Sports AFC on winning their national awards on Friday at McDonalds National Grassroots Football awards, which were held at the home of Cardiff City.
Both clubs’ special efforts in catering respectively for girls’ football and junior football in general were voted as the top of the list in their respective categories and club representatives were in attendance to collect their special trophies as they flew the Pembrokeshire Junior Footballing Flag with style.
Grassroots Project of the Year:
Winner: St Florence Girls FC
Geraint Jones and Kelly Thomas accepted the award, on behalf of the club, which was presented by Wales’ women’s national team manager, Jayne Ludlow.
Geraint and Kelly set up St Florence Girls last year to give girls the opportunity to play football, encouraging them to be active and develop their skills.
Their dedication and commitment has now seen the club enter four teams from Under10s to Under 16s in the Pembrokeshire Women’s & Girls’ League.
It was rightly regarded as a fantastic example of how to develop and provide grassroots football opportunities for girls and rightly earned terrific applause for its success.
Community Club of the Year:
Winner: Fishguard Sports AFC
Matthew Lamb and Owen Duggan accepted the award on behalf of the club that was presented by former Wales’ striker, Jermaine Easter. Over the past eight years Fishguard Sports have developed themselves in to a club that is at the centre of its community.
They have developed junior football for boys, girls and players with a disability, and the club currently has seven junior boys’ teams, four junior girls’ teams and a junior disability team. Alongside the two senior teams they have developed a new ground with changing facilities and a clubhouse that has finally given the club the home it deserves.
The tireless efforts and hard work of a number of volunteers within the club have allowed them to provide the extensive junior playing opportunities now available within the club.
