Milford United 3rds win the cup in memory of legend Brian Burgoyne
Fifth Division Cup final:
Hundleton 2nds 1 - Milford United 3rds 5
Milford United Football Club paid the perfect tribute to Brian Burgoyne last night as their third team turned in a great display to win the Fifth Division Cup at Monkton Lane.
Just a day after the sad news broke that the club stalwart had died The Robins, who had a picture of him on the wall of their changing room, hammered Hundleton 2nds 5-1 despite trailing to Connor Hay’s early goal.
But Lewys Tee and Levi Jones struck for Jon Murphy’s side before half time – and second half goals from Aaron Griffiths, William Vo Hong and Tee again sealed a comprehensive win.
Following a minute's applause before kick off, in pouring rain it was Hundleton who led 14 minutes in, and they did so in style as Steven Brenchley’s accurate diagonal ball from the right wing landed at the feet of Hay, who showed a good first touch before side footing home past Milford keeper Jared Davies.
But for the remainder of the half it was Milford on the front foot, and Tee had an immediate chance to equalise when he lobbed an effort over Hundleton keeper Shaun Newberry and wide of the post.
The set piece deliveries of Griffiths then began to cause problems and his out-swinging corner saw Ben Mathias go close – but he failed to connect properly with his close range volley.
Tee was then taken out by Rhys Bradney on the edge of the area and Griffiths’ free kick was pushed over by Newberry, but on the 35 minute mark, Milford deservedly levelled as Tarran Hawkins set up Tee from close range, and he drove a low shot home.
And then just before the break the first half turnaround was complete as Vo Hong dribbled into the area, and the ball went loose into the path of Jones, who blasted high into the net.
Vo Hong then came close to a goal of his own early in the second half as his left foot volley flew inches wide of the post, and then at he other end, Hundleton fashioned a great chance when Sam Sharp’s skilful flick put Hay though on goal, but his angled shot went the wrong side of the far post.
But on the hour mark Milford extended their lead after Jones’ through ball set up Vo Hong, who was tackled as he tried to skip round Newberry. From the corner that followed, the ball was cleared back to Griffiths, and this time his cross evaded everyone and found the far corner of the net.
And just two minutes later it was 4-1 as Vo Hong again went clean through, and this time he made no mistake with a neat left footed finish.
The Robins then capped the win in the dying minutes when Tee struck again, his angled shot creeping under Newberry.
It rounded off a great night’s work for Milford, and afterwards skipper Owen Wilson collected the silverware from Steve Briers of the Pembrokeshire Football League.
And in a nice touch, the players and manager Murphy invited Andrew Burgoyne, another great club man and the son of Brian, to help lift the trophy and join in the post-match celebrations.
