Winning Tenderfoot Disability

Disabled Sports within Pembrokeshire reached a new high over the weekend with the local Tenderfoot Team retaining their crown as Welsh Disabled Sports Team Champions for the sixth time in seven years at the Rotary-sponsored Welsh Team Championships held at the International Sports Village, Newport.

Two Pembrokeshire teams competed, with team captain for the main Tenderfoot Team Marion Haymer (Broadmoor) setting the standards for the day by winning the Boccia competition with fellow competitors John And Angie Richards (Broad Haven).

The team also came first in the Target Tennis competition thanks to Lynsey McCarthy (Milford Haven), Diane Phillips (Pentlepoir) and Angie Richards, although James Dash (Spittal) and Lynsey McCarthy did relinquish their nine year reign as Table Tennis Champions when they came in second.

Further notable performances came from Darren Briggs (Milford Haven), Daniel Pullin and Jack Wood (both of Rosemarket) in the swimming and Jonathan Hubbard (Kilgetty) in the Basketball.

Well done the Tenderfoot second string

The second team under the captaincy of Wayne Llewellyn (Llandissilio) competed well throughout the day with further notable performances from David Phillips (Pentlepoir) in the Table Tennis, Francis Corbett and Freda Williams (both of Narberth) in the Football Shoot-out, Kimberley Woolley (Kilgetty) in the Boccia, Simon Woolley and Mark Price (both of Hundleton) in the New Age Kurling.

An additional bonus for the day was the award to Angie Richards as the Sports Female Personality.

The Tenderfoot Team was formed in conjunction with the Rotary Clubs of Saundersfoot and Tenby who undertook the training for this year’s competition, ably assisted in the transport arrangements by the Rotary Club of Narberth and Whitland, with a strong contingent from the Saundersfoot club travelling to Newport to support the teams.  The Rotary Clubs can be justifiably proud of the fact that they are the only Clubs in Wales to undertake such training for the disabled.

Charles and Ian both delighted

Team Managers, Rotarians Charles Hopkinson and Jim Ball of the Rotary Club of Saundersfoot, said that it was the most competitive competition in years, with Tenderfoot stockpiling the same points as the second placed team, although only coming out as eventual winners on the amount of competitions won during the day, adding that the dedication and strength shown by all team members was fantastic, particularly as the event attracted team entries from all over Wales.

Tenderfoot train at the Regency Hall, Saundersfoot on the last Friday of each month where new entrants are encouraged to participate.   Further information about Tenderfoot is available from Rotarian Charles Hopkinson on (01834) 813433.
