The 2016 Tenderfoot Team Winners

Pembrokeshire Disabled Sports reached a new high over the weekend with the local Tenderfoot Team once again retaining their crown as Welsh Disabled Sports Team Champions for the seventh time in eight years at the Rotary-sponsored Welsh Team Championships held at the International Sports Village, Newport.
 
Two teams competed, with team captain for the main Tenderfoot Team, Jack Wood (Rosemarket), setting the standard for the day in the swimming along with fellow competitors Darren Briggs (Milford Haven) and Daniel Pullin (Rosemarket).
 

Early successes set the tone

 
The teams came first and second in New Age Kurling thanks to solid performances from Jonathan Hubbard (Kilgetty), John and Angie Richards (Broad Haven), Mark Price and Simon Woolley (Hundleton) and Kimberley Woolley (Kilgetty), whilst Linsey McCarthy (Milford Haven) reached the final of the Table Tennis competition along with fellow competitor David Phillips (Pentlepoir) and a third place in the Target Golf thanks to Marion Haymer (Broadmoor) and Diane Phillips (Pentlepoir).
 
The second team, under the captaincy of Mark Price, competed well throughout the day with further notable performances from Geraint Lewis (Saundersfoot) and Wayne Llewellyn (Llandissilio) in the swimming, Francis Corbett (Narberth) in the shot putt, Martin Matthews (Pembroke) in the pool and his wife Toni in  target golf.  An additional bonus for the day was the award to Toni Matthews as the Sports Personality of the competition.
 

Great partnership with Rotary

 
The Tenderfoot Team was formed in conjunction with the Rotary Clubs of Saundersfoot and Tenby who again undertook the training for this year’s competition, ably assisted in the transport arrangements by the Rotary Club of Narberth and Whitland, with a strong contingent from all three Clubs travelling to Newport to support the teams.  The Rotary Clubs can be justifiably proud of the fact that they are the only Rotary Clubs in Wales to undertake such training for the disabled.
 
Team managers, Rotarians Charles Hopkinson and Jim Ball of the Rotary Club of Saundersfoot, stated that it had been an outstanding achievement and an extremely emotional day, adding that the dedication and strength shown by all team members was fantastic, particularly as the event attracted team entries from all over Wales.
