The Pembrokeshire schools disability swimming gala was held at Fishguard Leisure Centre recently, organised by Sport Pembrokeshire in partnership with Disability Sport Wales. The event was sponsored by Stena Line.

Sixty-five pupils from Pembroke Dock Community School, Ysgol Bro Gwaun, Ysgol Dewi Sant, Hakin Community School, Ysgol Glannau Gwaun, Pembroke School, Greenhill School and Portfield School competed in 30 races.

Angela Miles, the Disability Sport Officer for Pembrokeshire, said she was delighted with the number of entries this year, and that some swimmers were identified to progress to a regional gala in Swansea.

Lots of volunteers involved

John Havard, a swimming teacher at Fishguard Leisure Centre, started the races and Rhian Homer from Pembrokeshire College collated the results, assisted by Russell Jones from Sport Pembrokeshire. They were helped by twelve year 11 GCSE Physical Education pupils from Ysgol Bro Gwaun, assisting as time keepers.

Cllr Susan Perkins, Cabinet Member for Education and Safeguarding, presented all competitors with medals on behalf of Stena Line. She was very impressed with the standard of swimming.
