Over 600 pupils from Milford Haven Comprehensive School, Bush School in Pembroke, Sir Thomas Picton and Ysgol y Preseli have been trying Paralympics sports to raise awareness of the 2016 Paralympics Games in Rio.

Sport Pembrokeshire actively involved

Sport Pembrokeshire active young people officers Wyndham Williams and Dan Bellis orchestrated the shows giving pupils the chance to try wheelchair basketball, boccia and sitting volleyball.

The days allowed Sport Pembrokeshire Disability Officer Angela Miles to identify some youngsters to attend a new disability multisport programme coming to Haverfordwest soon.

Cllr Morse delighted

“The Paralympics is a showcase for various sports however few people have a chance to experience the sports from a competitor’s perspective,” said Cabinet Member for Culture Sport and Leisure, Councillor Elwyn Morse.

“The roadshows allowed able-bodied and disabled pupils to come together and be encouraged to give the sports a go, and raise awareness of the difficulties some athletes face in order to compete.

“The PE staff at the schools also had the chance to learn how to include the sports into their classes.

“It was an overwhelming success that may very well have unearthed some stars of the future.”

Details of the multisport programme will be released soon.
