The Webbs 2018 Pembrokeshire cricket batting and bowling statistics
The Webbs produce their fascinating figures for the 2018 cricket season in Pembrokeshire’s top echelon
Paul Webb has done sterling work as chairman of the Pembroke County Cricket Club for the past two seasons but readily admits that he is a cricket 'anorak' who enjoys compiling statistics - and as usual has sent us, ably assisted by equally committed wife Janice, the facts regarding the season just passed in the Thomas Carroll Pembroke County Cricket Club's first division.
‘The Doc’ rules the batting roost
In the batting stakes there is no doubt that Simon Holliday (Haverfordwest Cricket Club) had a bumper season with the bat as he reached an amazing 1,085 runs and, assisted by five not outs, ended up with an average of 108.5 runs!
He was followed in terms of runs by Dan Sutton (Cresselly's opening bat) who scored 758 runs at an average of 54.14 and then Kurtis Marsh (Kilgetty) with 601 runs at an average of 46.23.
Holliday would still rule the roost if positions were decided on an average basis but the other two would be unseated by Neyland’s 7th-placed Paul Murray (69.42) and Whitland’s Matthew Davies (10
th) would be close on 55.14.
Runs galore in the sun
In a dry summer made for batting it was interesting that there were no fewer than 15 centuries scored, with Holliday claiming four of them and Sutton collecting two alongside nine other centurions listed in Paul's statistics.
Holliday also shared the number of innings that were not out with Henry Durrant (Neyland), who batted lower down the order and was unbeaten on five occasions whilstas Murray, Lee Summons (Haverfordwest) and Dan Cherry (Cresselly) were next un the undefeated stakes with four apiece.
To round off the batting side of things it was also interesting to note that Neyland and Cresselly, who finished respectively in first and second, had the most batsmen in the top 20 with three run- makers each!
Interesting tie in the bowling stats
On the bowling front it is interesting that there was a tie for top spot from opposite ends of the spectrum on 40 wickets, in terms of style and age. Johnny White is very much the 'new kid on the block'; the teenage fast bowler delivering his left arm quickies for Haverfordwest from the top end at The Racecourse and catching the eye of the county and Welsh youth selectors in the process.
Andrew Miller has bowled his tantalising slow stuff for Neyland for two decades and still torments not only local players but those from 'up the line', like those who were stunned this season in the Welsh Cup as he helped Neyland to the final at Sophia gardens. Well done 'Windy'!
Whitland skipper Iestyn Scourfield finished third in the averages with 37 scalps and could also boast the best figures of the season with a 9 for 39 haul, closely followed by Tom Arthur (Cresselly) with 9 for 47. In terms of runs per wicket, another talented young player was Geraint Rees (Neyland) with 8.65, followed by Scourfield (9.67) as the only two in single figures.
And finally . . .
Haverfordwest were the leading club as they had four bowlers in the top 20, followed by Neyland, Whitland, Llangwm and Cresselly, all with three players listed.
Interestingly, there fewer all-rounders to come out of the stats as only four players featured with both bat and ball.
Simon Holliday was the leading all-rounder as he followed his batting top spot with sixth in the bowling of his left-arm spin, followed by Matthew Davies (10th and 20th), Noah Davies (20th and 13th) and Henry Durrant (18th and 12th).
It all adds up to a fascinating read and as usual we at PembrokeshireSport.co.uk would like to thank Paul and Janice for taking so much time in carefully compiling the statistics for us to enjoy!
