Thanks to Janice and Paul Webb - and congrats to Kurtis Marsh

Paul and Janice Webb

Paul and Janice Webb have just produced this season’s stats from Division One of the Pembroke County Cricket League and after poring over every scorecard from Neyland to Llechryd have come up with some fascinating figures for us to look at.

Today we are delighted to publish the batting stats, with the bowling figures later this week – and we want to play particular tribute to Janice for her diligence in obtaining all the figures and translating them into an interesting read for us!

On the batting front the undoubted star has been Kurtis Marsh, who has the deserved honour of scoring a massive 1070 runs and so not only tops the table but has far and away the best average, something that doesn’t happen every year.

Kurtis Marsh

Marsh shows his pedigree ahead of Sutton and Jones

Kurtis has also shown his pedigree by batting really well for the Pembroke County Cricket Club and he is one of only three players who can lay claim to be one of  the genuine all-rounders as he has also finished in the top 20 for bowling, albeit in joint 20th spot.

In his 15 innings he was not out on five occasions and in a remarkable show of consistency stroked his way to seven 50s and four centuries to finish with an average of 107 – which was 202 runs ahead of second-placed Dan Sutton (Cresselly).

Dan batted really well throughout the season and in another show of consistency hit seven 50s and two centuries to finish with 868 runs at an average of 66.78, a tally that would have earned him top spot in some campaigns.

Then came Geraint Jones, whose big hitting was sadly unable to keep Whitland in the top echelon despite his 549 tally, which put him just a single ahead of Dai Davies (Haverfordwest) but in two fewer innings. I saw Geraint blast some of the biggest sixes in the season and he was so unlucky not to register a ton because he was dismissed for 99 in one match.

Dan Sutton

Some massive innings – and huge sixes galore!

The biggest innings came from Dan Sutton, with a massive 201 not out which included 24 fours and TEN sixes so that a total of 146 of his runs came in boundaries, and on the same day Marsh stroked 21 boundaries in his 140 not out, whilst Alex Bailey also showed why he is so feared because in his top score of 167 not out he belted no fewer than SIXTEEN sixes against Haverfordwest.

Cresselly showed why they are renowned for their batting as five of their top order feature in the top 20, with Sutton and Bailey joined by Matthew Morgan and Iwan Izzard (125) as centurions and Simon Cole scoring 73 as he often came in lower down the order.

League champs Neyland had Nick Koomen (5th), Nathan Banner (12th) and Ashley Sutton (15th) whilst Lawrenny, who lost the title on the final day of the season, surprisingly only, had Marsh in the final list.

Haverfordwest were the other team to feature with three players in skipper Dai Davies (4th), Ben Field (8th) and Danny Potter (19th) as both Whitland and Saundersfoot had two apiece – and there was at least one batsman featuring from every club.

Outside the top twenty there were another three centuries, one each scored by Lewis Hicks (103 not out for Carew), Shaun Whitfield (the Carew skipper scoring 119) and Neyland’s Patrick Bellerby (105)

In total there were 18 centuries scored, about par for the course over a single campaign, with 69 half centuries as the runs flowed in the Pembroke County Cricket League’s division one for 2021!
