For the first time this season matchers weren’t played in the Indoor Cricket League as Pembroke Dock were unable to field a team, despite the offer of help from Neyland in making sure that at least the fixtures were fulfilled and The Dock wouldn’t suffer a financial penalty.

But The Dock, normally a committed club to indoor cricket, were still unable to be involved and in the only match of the afternoon Neyland A showed why they are Welsh champions with a huge win over a young team fielded by the Pembrokeshire Association of Cricket Coaches, who did well to play because a number of their regular players were involved in the county junior tour to the West Indies.

Neyland show batting power

Batting first, Neyland lost Jake Booth early on to George Smith but continued powerfully through Paul Murray and Ashley Sutton, who both scored quickly before retiring, with Patrick Bellerby (25) and Nick Koomen (27) both batting well before they also reached the mandatory score of 25 to retire.

Ashley Sutton - another good performance by Neyland all-rounderNeyland skipper Sean Hannon chipped in with 10 before becoming George Smith’s second victim but then Murray and Sutton returned for a second bite of the cricketing cherry and showed why they are regarded as two of the most powerfully players in this form of cricket.

Murray smashed five sixes and four fours in his massive 67 not out, whilst Sutton stroked two sixes and five fours en route to an undefeated 36 as Neyland ended on 188 for 2 wickets in their allotted ten overs.

PACC start well but fade later on

PACC also made a good start through skipper Jordan Howell and Gethin Scourfield, who was run out for 16 to start something of a collapse as Bellerby, Sutton and Murray all claimed a wicket before Booth claimed two wickets in consecutive deliveries as Nick Koomen stumped the returning Howell for 27 and then bowled Smith.

He was unable to claim the first hat-trick of the indoor game, though, but it mattered little because Neyland won by 126 runs in 7.2 overs – but the talented teenagers of the PACC squad will have learned a great deal from the experience and deserve credit for never giving up under pressure.
