Makepeace shines as Hook take control

Ormond Youth Plate competition:

Neyland Youth (70 all out) lost to Hook Youth (76 for 2) by 8 wickets

Umpires: Bob Elliott and Tony Walsh

Scorers: Jonathan Willington (Hook) and Ian Milsom/Martin Laugharne (Neyland)

Venue: Lawrenny Cricket Club

Man of the Match: Harry Makepeace (Hook)

George James and Phil LloydHook Youth were worthy winners of the Ormond Youth Plate Competition as they took on their counterparts from Neyland and on the night bowled, fielded and batted with that little more conviction as they dismissed the opposition in 14 of their allotted 20 overs and then took just 8.1 overs to reach their target.

Makepeace shines with four-wicket over

And the undoubted highlight was a superb single over by Harry Makepeace when Neyland were sitting on 61 for 4 in 12 overs before skipper George James threw the ball to Makepeace at the bottom end and he bowled Kacey Arran with his first ball.

Aidan Rees kept out his second delivery but then was bowled before Dylan Rowlands was caught by keeper Finlay Elphick and Liam Rees was clean bowled  to give Makepeace a hat-trick and an unlikely 4 for 1 haul as Lewis Hallett took a single off his final delivery!

Good bowling by Hook

Another bowler who caught the eye was Lewis Miller, who raced in to shift Neyland skipper and key batsman William Hughes and then Joseph Campodonic for ducks with the aid of good catches by Elphick and Niall Griffiths to leave them struggling at 7 for 2. Strike partner Joe Phillips also applied real pressure as he only conceded a single in his three-over stint and Callum Jenkins slow left-arm stuff saw him clean up the tail with 2 for 8.

After a disappointing start Kieran Arran (three boundaries in his 22) and Iestyn Nash (another three fours in his 15) settled things down well in advancing the Neyland total to 51 but both departed in quick succession, Nash bowled by Lucas Davies and Arran castled by George James’ slow stuff.

But from then on no-one was able to managed double figures and Neyland’s final tally of 70 owed much to ‘Mr Extras’ with 15 wides in his 20 runs.

Joe Phillips.

Harry MakepeaceHook speed to target after losing an early wicket

Hook’s response also started badly as Owen Phelps was caught without scoring at point by Rees off Hughes but then Lewis Miller and George James, again assisted by a number of wides, took firm control, with George James a big six and two fours in a quick-fire 24 before he was well caught at deep mid-wicket by Campodonic with 24 to his name.

Miller anchored matters well with two boundaries in his excellent undefeated 18 and at the other end Elphick scored 16 not out, including a six to finish the game in style.

Chairman Paul does well, as usual

County Club chairman Paul Webb performed the presentation ceremony in his usual style as he introduced Phil Lloyd, from the family of the late David Lloyd, who was hon secretary of Pembroke County Cricket Club from 1959 to 1974 and sponsor this match.

He presented the silver salver to Hook skipper George James before Phil Tallett (Stackpole) chose Harry Makepeace as man of the match to bring an entertaining evening’s cricket to a close at sunny Lawrenny!
