Crusaders in top form as youngsters shine

Participating Teams:  Cleddau Crusaders, Neyland C & Pembrokeshire Association of Cricket Coaches

Venue: Tenby Leisure Centre
Umpires: Neil Croucher & Peter Davies

The emphasis was very much on youth as the teams participating this week were, a few old fogies apart, talented teenagers gaining valuable experience of the indoor game, with the Cleddau Crusaders comfortably winning both of their games, whilst The Pembrokeshire Association of Cricket Coaches squad won the other match by beating Neyland C.

Game One: Cleddau Crusaders (137 for 3) beat Neyland C (93 for 4)

Jacob LayThe Crusaders batted well against Neyland C, with their final total enhanced by a huge to total of 35 extras as the opposing side took time to find their line and length.

Noah Davies (15) and Phil Llewellyn (16) gave the Crusaders a steady start before Jacob Lay batted really to score 26 before retiring, with other support coming from Aled Phelps (22) and Iwan Griffiths (19 not out).
Jason Oatley gave Neyland C a good start with 25 before having to retire, whilst Callum Power (2) and Nathan Sutton (12) also looked confident but departed as they risked quick runs to increase the tempo and fell to some sharp Crusaders’ fielding.

Jamie Smith also chipped in with an unbeaten 19 but Neyland C ran out of overs, still 45 runs short of victory.

Game Two: Cleddau Crusaders (147 all out) beat Pembrokeshire Association of Cricket Coaches (104 for 4)

Phil LlewellynCleddau Crusaders beat PACC by 43 runs after again batting first and finding ‘Mr Extras’ as their top scorer with a massive 40 runs from wides and no balls.

Noah Davies (39) and Phil Llewellyn (41) looked in control during their two visits to the crease before Davies was bowled by Lewys Gibby and Llewellyn fell to one of the best return catches seen in a long time in the indoor game as Jordan Howell threw himself backwards to pouch the chance.

Of the other Crusaders’ batsmen only Aled Phelps (18) ever stayed long as Lewis Hough was the pick of the PACC bowling with a 2 for 16 spell.

When PACC batted, skipper Jordan Howell maintained his record of not having been dismissed as he top scored with 35 not out after returning to action late on after initially retiring with 25, whilst Jack Nicholas retired on 26 and Gibby ended up with 20 not out.

But they had fallen behind the clock against tight bowling from Llewellyn, Davies and Phelps so were unable to score at the necessary rate to deny the Crusaders a deserved second success of the session.

Game Three: Neyland C (58 all out) lost to PACC (58 for 1)

Jordan HowellPACC strolled to victory over Neyland C, who batted first but could only muster 58 runs whilst losing all their wickets, whilst PACC chased down such a modest total for the loss of Jack Nicholas for a duck.

Jason Oatley and Callum Power managed double figures for Neyland but again Hough (2 for 16), Ian McDonald (1 for 20) and George Smith (2 for 5) put a clamp on too many attacking shots, assisted by excellent PACC fielding.

Oatley did shift Jack Nicholas for a duck but then suffered a batting assault by Hough, who blitzed four sixes off his bowling: Jordan Howell (15) was again undefeated and Harry Nicholas chipped in with a few runs at the end to give PACC a rapid victory in only 4-4 overs.
