A last look at 2016 Cricket - Division One statistics provided by Paul and Janice Webb
As usual at the end of each cricket season, the Webb family from Tavernspite have compiled the statistics from division one of the Nicholas Insurance- sponsored Pembroke County Cricket League – and interesting reading they make too.
Paul Webb, who has been kept busy late season in his role as chairman-elect of the league and excellent announcer at finals, would be the first to admit that this season’s batting and bowling stats would not have been completed but for the determination of much better half Janice, who has had to chase around finding a few late scoresheets – so well done Mrs Webb!
‘Jamer’ tops the bowling charts . . .
Adam James sits proudly atop the bowling averages, way ahead of all opposition with his pace stuff for Haverfordwest whilst Adam Chandler (Cresselly) scored far and away the most runs – but couldn’t match Simon Holliday (Haverfordwest) in terms of average because ‘The Doc’ averaged over three figures.
Holliday can also lay unopposed claims to being the best all-rounder in the league because for the first time ever there is only one player to appear in the batting and bowling lists – and that is him!
James grabbed 50 victims as he steamed down the hill at The Racecourse and he could lay claim to helping his team mate to the best average because he had Chandler caught behind by Huw Scriven from the very first ball at Haverfordwest and second ball in Cresselly!
Second in the bowling stakes was Neyland’s canny leg spinner Andrew Miller with 36 wickets, still five ahead of Tom Davies (Carew) and Ben Quartermaine, who certainly led relegated Narberth by example. Llanrhian were the other team to make the ‘dreaded drop’ and understandably, there was no bowler from Llandigige Fawr to feature.
. . . Chandler rules the roost in terms of runs scored!
Geraint Morris was Llanrhian’s only batsman to feature as he slipped in at No 20 in the batting stakes, which had Chandler maintaining his fine form of the previous season – and his amazing consistency and concentration which saw him stroke six 50s and three centuries from his 15 innings, five of them not out.
Nick Koomen came second in terms of runs scored, and usually at a tempo that gave Neyland early boost, as did third-placed run-gatherer Iwan Izzard, who joined team mate Chandler in usually getting Cresselly off to a flying start.
Holliday finished in fifth place having batted three or four times fewer than his main opponents but still having six unbeaten innings out of 13 starts and two of the 10 hundreds scored.
Either side of Holliday came the Johnston duo of Steve Mills Jnr and Dan Sutton, whose end-of-season heroics with the bat not only showed what powerful batsmen they are but almost certainly kept the Glebelands Gang in the division for 2017.
