Cricket Round-Up - 7th June 2025
Division One:
Current pace-makers
Carew comfortably accounted for
Herbrandston as Tim Hicks continued his superb form with an unbeaten 115 that included 13 fours and a six, with top all-rounder Shaun Whitfield giving major support as he blitzed 51 not out from 31 balls that included three boundaries and four big sixes, with Adam Chandler chipping in with 34, as Herbie old-timer Paul Nicholas was back to help skipper Robbie Hood as they grabbed two wickets each.
Another veteran in Kristan Bennett led Herbie’s response with 57 not out in 37 balls and including six fours and three sixes but Sam harts returned to first-team action and showed what he can do with a terrific 6 for 22 haul that helped The Rooks to victory by 104 runs – well done Sam!
Near-neighbours
Cresselly continue to give chase as both now have seven wins from seven matches before their big clash next Saturday – and it was a good away success against an in-form
Saundersfoot that sees Cresselly just four points behind in second spot.
The Seasiders built a formidable score thanks to another boundary-laden innings of 106 not out by Sam Franklin that formed the back-bone of the innings since skipper Yannik Parker was next-highest scorer with 30 as opposing captain Tom Arthur again topping The Doves’ bowling with 4 for 45.
Franklin (4 for 30) also excelled as a bowler as he finished with 4 for 30 but Phil Williams (54) anchored Cresselly’s response and Tom Murphy also batted well before Alex Bailey (30 not out) was joined by Tom Arthur in an unbroken partnership of 30 that took his team home by 2 wickets in the final over – but The Seasiders stay third in the table.
Just below them sit current champions
Neyland, who made the short trip to Pill Parks with a depleted side but still had enough fire-power to beat basement battlers
Llangwm by 102 runs, with Dai Davies stroking 108 not out (12 fours and three sixes) to lead the way as skipper Sean Hannon moved himself up to open and scored a gritty 61 as the duo shared a century stand.
Teenager Manny Davies joined Josh Davies in picking up two deserved wickets for Llangwm but a final score of 280 must have been a daunting prospect for the homesters as Huw Brock returned to action with a Llangwm top score of 52 - but Alan Webster showed he can bowl as well as bat by claiming 5 for 22, with a brace for teenager Kieran Arran as Neyland claimed maximum points to atone for defeat the previous week.
Lawrenny remain strongly in mid-table as they beat another struggling side in
Burton, who are yet to come to terms with life back in the top echelon and on this occasion lurched to 24 for 5 as they pursued Lawrenny’s solid score after the home team had been asked to bat first.
There were no huge scores as Alfie Buckle and Rob Williams topped the chart with 31 apiece but others chipped in along with 23 from ‘Mr Extras’ as Luke Hayman (4 for 29) and Morgan Scale were the most penetrative Burton bowlers.
Morgan Scale (24 not out) also topped the batting from his No 8 berth but wily veteran Rob Williams (3 for 23) and Jamie Lewis *3 for 26) caused early problems before Lawrenny wrapped things up as two wickets apiece for Ryan Morton and Fin Lewis helped them to victory by 67 runs.
Whitland enjoyed a comfortable win over
Haverfordwest as they were put in to bat, battled hard to set a decent score and then eased home by 84 runs as The Town never looked comfortable in chasing a score just over 200.
Kevin Pearce opened for Whitland with another 50 and he had support from Gopal Ramasamy and Gethin Scourfield, who both got out when looking likely to join Pearce with at least a 50 – but wily old fox Clive Tucker grabbed 3 for 27 alongside a wicket brace for Jake Merry.
But five Town batsmen reached 20 but then got out as Whitland bowling persistence paid off as Iwan Bevan led the way with 4 for 12, supported by two wickets each by Jonathan Thomas and Geraint Jones as Haverfordwest were dismissed for 120 and as a result both teams are locked just above the relegation spots but at least with a little breathing space over the bottom two.
Division Two:
Narberth maintained their 100% record after seven games and are now 27 points ahead of the chasing pack, with opponents
Hook having fallen to fourth place as a result of this narrow defeat.
Hook had Jamie Phelps and his three sons Aled, Rhys and Owen making it a family quartet, a rare even at this level, but only Rhys (62) got amongst the runs after Hook had been asked to bat first, with 22 extras as the next top scorer as Shay Norcross, Matthew Johns, and Lewis Hough shared six wickets – but with a final tally of 160 for 9 setting a tidy score for Narberth to chase.
Loui Davies (47) and Shay Norcross gave them a great start in an opening stand of 60 but again fortunes ebbed and flowed as no-one else was able to build a sizeable score against Brennan Martin bagged 4 for 42 and there were two wickets each for Owen Phelps and Wayne Griffiths until the ninth Narberth wicket fell at 155 but No 10 Matthew Johns hit the last six runs needed, the winning hit going to the boundary as No 11 Ben Hughes looked on having faced five balls for his equally vital 0 not out!
St Ishmaels moved into second place after two early defeats and good wins since, their latest victims being
Pembroke in a high-scoring tussle where Tish scored 226 for 8 and Pembroke fell tantalisingly short on 217 for 9 but are still in third place.
Jonathan Pawlett scored 100 for Tish (16 fours) before getting out to the final ball – after Tish slumped to 21 for 3 but then Pawlett found a willing partner in a stand of 115 as Brennan Devonald smashed five fours and seven sixes in his 79 (52 balls) as skipper Jack Harries, Callum Davies and Andy Tait were the principal Pembroke bowlers.
Devonald completed a memorable match by also topping the Tish bowling list with 3 for 28 after he had bowled key Pembroke run maker Jack Harries cheaply but then Ceri Brace 60 and Will Davies (61) shared a partnership of 136 to tilt the game in their favour - only for teenager Thomas William to help pull it back but despite giving away 28 extras Tish finally wrapped things up as Callum Davies and Sam Davies ere still at the crease at the end of their 40 overs but still a tantalising 10 runs short of victory!
Johnston have moved quietly into fifth place but when they had reached 92 all out against
Carew 2nds at Glebelands it was hard to see them claiming a fourth win at the expense of the Rooks Reserves – but they bowled and fielded well and were clearly delighted to win by 13 runs!
Keegan Codd (28 not out) had helped Johnston reach even that low tally and he could rightly claim the man of the match tag as he also bowled well to claim 3 for 24.
Carew bowlers Joel Read (4 for 150, Barry Evans (3 for 25) and Corey Hall (2 for 24) had bowled good spells but only Hall and veteran Haydn Shapcott ever stayed long as Codd was joined by Liam Mills and Steven-James Mills (both 3 for 18) before Nick Davies helped wrap things up for The Glebelands Gang’.
There were runs aplenty as
Cresselly Seconds amassed 270 for 6 and basement club
Llanrhian had a cracking innings by Jack Jones that took them to 216 for 5 but still left them 54 runs short of their opponents.
As usual for Cresselly 2nds they had Neal Williams (62) leading their batting and solid innings of 30+ by Corey Lewis, Griff Jenkins, dad Stefan, and Iwan Thomas as Gwynnant Watson grabbed 4 for 43 for Llanrhian.
Jack Jones is a class act with the bat for Llanrhian and his unbeaten 115 was made from 99 balls, with seven fours and three sixes, assisted by cameos from Russell Watkins, Llion Williams and Fraser Watson – but Cresselly kept a lid on the run-rate and were never likely to allow Llanrhian to claim their first win of the season.
Burton Seconds remain ninth in the table but although still well behind in the table they closed the gap on
Llechryd at Oatfield park in a low-scoring clash where they scored 124 all out but managed to dismiss Llechryd by 18 runs fewer.
Jack Morgan (44) and Harry Owen (37) top-scored for Burton as Graham Keen and Jamie Smith grabbed three wickets each for the visitors, with Florian Cartwright just behind in a disappointing performance
Llechryd then slumped to 40 for 5 as Harry Owen removed two wickets and Johnny Scale showed the pace and accuracy belying the fact that he is 59 years young as he claimed 3 for 13 in eight overs, four of them maidens, including the key wicket of John Curran.
Dan Griffiths followed up with 2 for 16 and although Keen (35) and Smith tried hard to redress the balance it was Burton who eased home by that narrow margin.

Other Divisions:
In Division Three, Fishguard continued their great start to the season by beating Hook Seconds thanks to runs by Matthew Delaney (72 not out) and Assembly Member Sam Kurtz (56 not out) and in the same division Paul Tough marked his return with 92 not out as Haverfordwest 2nds beat St Ishmaels Seconds – and The Town Thirds beat Tish Seconds as Syed Bokhar grabbed 5 for 27.
Richard Thorne again showed his claa with 94 not out and Simon Stanford followed his recent ton with 89 for Saundersfoot alongside veteran Steve Cook, with Mike Bailey taking 5 for 22 as The Seasiders played well.
Rys Eynon blitzed the top score of the day with 159 not out for Lawrenny Seconds, whilst Andrew Fletcher, perhaps better known for his rugby, belted an unbeaten 82 for Llechryd Seconds, who tied with Haverfordwest Fourths as Richard Davies responded with an excellent all-round performance of 61 and 5 for 37 for Danny Dewstowe’s team, whilst Andrew Davies starred for Llechryd Thirds with 96 not out.
But finally, the performance of the day came in Division Six, where Kilgetty Seconds were shot out for 25 and Whitland lost six wickets in reaching their target. Playing for Kilgetty and grabbing 3 for 11 was former Pembroke County Cricket Club president Nick Evans who is now EIGHTY-FOUR YEARS OLD and playing in his 70th year in the county.
Was ‘Evs’ happy with those figures? Not a bit of it because he says he had three catches dropped – but it gave him a run out because later in the year he will be off with Worcestershire Vets on a tour to Holland and Belgium, after playing all over the world for many years. What a man!
