The talented young cricketers of the Pembroke County Cricket Club completed a deserved double last Sunday as they travelled to Llandyssul and completed a deserved double over old rivals the South Wales Cricket Association.

Sean Hannon’s team previously beat the SWCA by five wickets at Lawrenny and repeated the process after SWCA skipper Gregg Fisher won the toss and elected to bat first on what looked a very good track at Llandyssul.

Bright start by The Association . . .

The decision seemed vindicated as openers Ian Pask and James Griffiths put on 69 for the first wicket before the latter was adjudged lbw to Matthew Davies for a hard-hitting 40 that included eight boundaries.

Daniel Allen joined Pask and added a brisk 15 before he was well caught by Brad McDermott-Jenkins off the spin bowling of Kieran O’Connor and when Pask was run out from a good throw by Kurtis Marsh to keeper Hannon for 43 (only two fours) the County team gained the upper hand.

. . . But they lost their way as The County put pressure on in the field

From then on only Ben Edkins (run out for 15 in a total misunderstanding that left both batsmen at the same end) and Fisher (10) managed double figures as the county team fielded well in support of Davies (2 for 21 – one stumping) and McDermott-Jenkins (3 for 24, including a sharp catch and stumping by his captain) the home side laboured to 155 for 8 in their allotted 40 overs, perhaps 25 short of earlier expectations.

County team start and end well

Pembrokeshire also started well as Toby Hayman scored 15 in a stand of 57 with Dan Sutton, as always eager to dominate the bowlers and doing just that until he was out for 52, including eight fours, in a disappointing short period for the county as they lost three wickets for only nine runs.

But Ross Hardy (21) steadied the ship alongside McDermott-Jenkins (14) and when they departed the strength in depth of the Pembrokeshire squad was very much in evidence as all-rounder Matthew Davies again showed his worth as he scored an undefeated 25 and Henry Durrant chipped in with an undefeated nine runs to see them home to the double with four balls still in hand of an entertaining tussle.
