Division Two Cricket Reports

Burton (113 for 4)
beat Pembroke (119 all out)

Umpire: Dave Loosmore & Arthur Chapman

The father and son combination of Richard and Toby Hayman were instrumental in taking Burton past the winning post against Pembroke as the home side bowled and batted better than their opponents to earn 28 points whilst Pembroke pouched a meagre five points.

Veteran batsman Richard scored 20 not out in support of his talented 14 year old son Toby, who not only kept wicket well but stroked several boundaries in his undefeated 41 as the Hayman duo enjoyed their unbroken stand of 59 to finish the game in style.

PHOTO: A brilliant diving catch by Burton teenager Jack DaviesAsked to bat first, Pembroke had useful contributions from Rob Weston (29), Kevin Jenkins (15, including a very big six), Jonathan Rogers (14), Rocky Naik (14) and Rob Mathias (10). But no one was able to master the bowling of Tim Haggar, making a welcome return after seven years out of the game and claiming 5 for 42 in his 12 overs alongside Johnny Scale, who grabbed 4 for 12 in his excellent 10.3 overs. Sean Powell (3 for 29) and Jonathan Rogers (1 for 11) bowled well for Pembroke as Richard Jones (23) and Phil Sutton (12) laid the Burton foundations - before Toby and Richard Hayman did the rest!

against jaded Johnston

Whitland 2nds (118 for 4)
beat Johnston (117 all out)

Umpire: Tony Scourfield

Scorers: Ann-Marie Jenkins & Delyth Summons

Whitland seconds played really well to beat a Johnston First XI which rarely looked likely to take the spoils home once they were dismissed for 117 all out in 36.5 overs.

Ross Dewstowe (five fours in his 43) and Steve Jenkins (a late 29 not out) were the only Johnston batsmen to look settled against Steffan James (2 for 32), Geraint Phillips (1 for 19), Carl Smith (2 for 28) and Paul Webb (3 for 19).

Then Meyrick Rowlands revelled in his role as opening bat and hit nine fours in his splendid 67 and although Whitland lost four wickets in reaching 57 he then found a willing partner in Raff Willams, who blitzed two fours and two sixes in his unbeaten 27.

Gary James (2 for 24) and Simon Williams (1 for 13) bowled well for Johnston but with Rowlands and Raff Williams in full sail they reached their target in 36.5 overs.

Llanrhian (114 for 4)
beat Herbrandston (110 all out)

Umpire: Dave Brandon

Llanrhian were good value for victory against Herbrandston as Gareth ‘Cadfael’ Davies featured with both bat and ball.

Davies used his canny slow bowling to good effect as he picked up 3 for 10 in ten miserly overs alongside Luke Jones (3 for 27) and veteran Tony Kitchell (2 for 20) as only the in-form Kristan Bennett batted well with a half-century for Herbie after ace batsman Nathan banner went early.

Davies (26) was then joined by skipper Geraint Morris in an opening stand of 77 where Morris rapped seven fours and took key bowler Bennett out of the equation before he was out for a speedy 39. Nathan Banner claimed all four Llanrhian wickets to fall but Matthew Bennett struck a quick 25 not out, finishing with a six and a four to set the seal on a productive day for Llanrhian.

against old rivals

Carew 2nds (160 for 7)
beat Cresselly 2nds (150 all out)

Umpire: Trefor Evans

Matches between neighbours Carew and Cresselly are traditionally hard-fought and this second team clash was no exception as Carew amassed 160 for 7 and Cresselly were in contention all the way before falling a tantalising ten runs short.

Carew Seconds’ innings focussed around solid batting by Barry Evans (three sixes in his 38) and Chris Cole (19) before Joe Kidney provided the vital impetus with a hard-hitting knock 58 that included eight fours and a big six.

For Cresselly there was some useful bowling by Sam Harts (3 for 26 in 12 overs) and the father and son duo of Steve and Harry Thomas, with respective figures of 2 for 46 in nine overs and 2 for 23 in 12 overs.

Neale Williams anchored the Cresselly riposte with 43 alongside Huw Evans 29 but Rob Scourfield (5 for 28), Dom Hicks (2 for 35) and Lewis Hicks (1 for 8) took wickets at key times to give Carew a ten-run verdict.

Pembroke (134 for 8) beat Hook 99 all out

Umpire: Denis Chiffi

Scorers: Joy James (Hook)

Pembroke gained an impressive 35 runs victory over Hook to pick up 29 valuable league points at Treleet.
The home side batted first and posted a modest total of 134 for 8. Phil Hay was Pembroke’s top scorer with 43; he was ably supported by Rob Mathias (37) and Rob Weston (28), who both batted really well. Hook’s main wicket taker was Jake Wicks, who claimed 3 wickets for 36, plus Bradley Flood, Matthew Holder and Andrew Thomas took one apiece.

In reply, the visitors struggled with the accurate bowling of Sean Powell, who snapped up three wickets, and Ian Morrissey and Rob Weston took two apiece. Also Anthony John claimed a wicket  as Hook were bowled out for just 99 runs. Keith James (27), Jake Hicks (21) and Harry Thomas (10) had decent knocks for the visitors as the rest collapsed under pressure.

Johnston (209 for 8)
drew with Llanrhian (213 for 9)

Umpires: Tony Scourfield & Rob Elliott

Scorers: Delyth Summons (Johnston)

Llanrhian came away from the Gleblands Ground feeling rather satisfied with their day’s work after collecting 19 points in a high-scoring draw with Johnston, who looked likely to win at one stage as Leigh Walters batted really well.

The visitors batted first and there was a sparkling half-century for Gareth Davies (ten fours in his 54) that really set the tone whilst Matthew Bennett (40), Geraint Morris (22) and Rhodri Owen (36) all made valuable contributions. Johnston’s bowling attack was led by Simon Williams, who claimed three wickets alongside two each for skipper Chris Fitzpatrick, Liam James and Ross Dewstowe as the innings closed on a challenging 213 for 9.

In reply, the home side got off to a positive start with Leigh Walters scoring a cracking 80, his first ten scoring shots all being boundaries and with 17 fours before he got out. There were also useful knocks from Ross Dewstowe (35), Fitzpatrick (33) and John Summons (21). Llanrhian’s chief wicket-taker was Rhodri Owen with three and Matthew Bennett (2 for 25) and Tony Kitchell (1 for 31) took the other wickets as Johnston needed a six off the last ball to win but couldn’t quite make it..

Haverfordwest 2nds (86 for 7)
beat Carew 2nds (85 all out)

Umpires: Arthur Brady & Phil Marsden

Scorers: Ros Phillips (Haverfordwest)

There was an excellent all-round performance by skipper Nigel Delaney, who took four wickets and scored 27 runs, to help Haverfordwest Seconds gain victory over arch-rivals Carew Seconds at the Racecourse.

Carew struggled against Delaney who claimed 4 for 27 to put the visitors on the back foot as Micky Phillips and Josh Hicks also played an influential part as they took three wickets each as the Carew resistance collapsed with only Hinchliffe (35) and Dai Rees (24) reaching double figures.

Runs were hard to come by on a damp wicket as The Town responded with Delaney leading the way with 27 and he was ably supported by Richard Scriven (24) and Andrew Williams (21 not out) as The Town easded home. Carew’s James Hinchliffe and Dom Hicks took three wickets apiece as they pegged back the earlier struggling Town batsmen.

Herbrandston took the lion’s share of the points in a frustrating draw at home to Whitland seconds.

The home side opened the batting and there were decent knocks from Nathan Banner (42), Kristan Bennett (42), Jonty Bennett (20) and Gary Davies (11 not out). Meyrick Rowlands was the visitors’ chief wicket taker with three, but there were also wickets for Paul Webb (2 for 39) and Geraint Phillips (2 for 46) as the innings closed on a healthy looking 170 for 9 at tea.

In reply, the visitors were pegged back by some sharp bowling from Herbie’s Kristan Bennett (3 for 21), Nathan Banner (2 for 21), Dean John (2 for 31) and Jonty Bennett (1 for 14). But Whitland battled on with solid performances by Paul Webb (18), Jacob Lloyd, Josh Watson and Kevin Pearce (15) to secure a share of the spoils.

Cresselly 2nds too strong for Burton

Cresselly 2nds (227 for 5) beat Burton (78 all out)

Umpires: John Austin & Rob Couzens

Cresselly Seconds were too strong all round as they claimed a massive 149 runs victory over Burton, who were bowled all out for just 78 runs.

The home side batted first and built up impressive 227 runs for the loss of only five wickets. Johnny Scale (2 for 68) and Mark Hicks (1 for 30) took wickets for Burton and in reply only Mark Griffiths (22 not out) and Martin James showed any resistance with the bat as Cresselly Seconds picked up the maximum points for their supreme efforts.

Dai Dearden showed what an asset he is going to be for Whitland as the ex-Crymych skipper top scored for their seconds against their counterparts from Carew before rain brought an untimely halt to play at tea.

Dearden had several fours in his unbeaten 34 alongside Steffan James (24) and Meyrick Rowlands, as James Hinchliffe led the home bowling attack with a 4 for 20 haul.

Hinchliffe found support from Dom Hicks (3 for 45), Ceri Brace (1 for 12), Jonathan Harries (1 for 10) and Luke Hicks (1 for 5) but then the rains came and there was no play thereafter.

Haverfordwest Seconds made it a club double over old rivals Cresselly as they beat their counterparts in Division Two by five wickets with nine overs and five wickets to spare.

New skipper Nigel Delaney made his first call correctly and asked Cresselly to bat – and the home side reached 138 all out in 41 overs thanks to talented youngster Harry Thomas (30), Matthew Lewis (24 not out) and Scott Arthur (21). For The Town, Simon Williams (2 for 17 in 12 overs) and Josh Hicks (2 for 18) bowled well alongside James Morris (4 for 16 in 12).

Mikey Jones showed his potential as he stroked his way to 54 not out in the visitors’ reply, ably assisted by Nigel Delaney (29) Steve Phillips (14) and Richard Scriven (13) so they eased their way home in 40 overs, despite the efforts of Matthew Lewis (2 for 18) and Sam Harts (2 for 37).

The Cresselly match ball was sponsored by Matthew Lewis and family.

Neville Davies certainly started the new season with a bang as his excellent 74 not out helped Burton beat neighbours Johnston at Glebelands by 68 runs.

It was never easy on a pitch inevitably slowed by rain but Davies was rarely troubled, despite good bowling by Johnston veteran Richard James (3 for 37).

Leigh Walters topped the batting for the home side with 18 but they were shot out for a disappointing 63 runs thanks to the bowling of Jake Dixon (4 for 3), Johnny Scales (3 for 12) and Luke Hayman (3 for 28).

Umpires: Rob Couzens & Dai Morris

Llanrhian skipper Geraint Morris made a very good start to the season as he led his side to a comfortable win over Carew 2nds at Llandigige Fawr – and team mate Luke Jones celebrated a hat-trick.

David Rees (49 not out), Chris Cole (16) and James Hinchliffe (23) topped the Carew batting as Rhodri Owen (3 for 15), Matthew Bennett (2 for 22) and Tony Kitchell (1 for 20) joined Luke Jones (3 for 37) as the Llanrhian wicket-takers, Jones’ trapping his first and third victims LBW and with a ‘clean bowled’ sandwiched neatly in between.

It seemed a decent score by Carew but then Morris seven fours in his undefeated 64 alongside Gareth Davies (eight boundaries in his 48) before a wide delivery saw Llanrhian stroll home by eight wickets.

Pembroke (65 all out)
lost to Herbrandston (66 for 4)

Umpires: Tony Scourfield & John Austin

A powerful all-round performance by Kristan Bennett helped Herbrandston to a six-wicket success as the all-round sportsman followed a bowling analysis of 4 for 10 in eight overs with 42 not out in a winning total of 66 for 4.

Pembroke had Paul White (19), Rob Weston (19) and Rob Mathias (10) to thank for the bulk of their runs as they struggled to 65 all out against Bennett, Dean John (six maidens in his 2 for 19 in 12 overs), and Nathan Banner (1 for 34).

Banner was out first ball when Herbie batted after tea and they lurched from 5 for 2 to 30 for 4 as Pembroke’s new fast bowler Ian Forrester, an army lad from ‘up north’,  grabbed 4 for 12 in nine overs.

But Bennett lashed five fours in his unbeaten 42 and with Dean John contributing 14 not out Herbie were eventually good value for victory.

Whitland II (96 for 4)
beat Hook (95 all out)

Umpires: Arthur Brady & Ben Cole

Scorers: Anne-Marie Jenkins & Joy James

Whitland Seconds played really well to beat Hook’s first team, with tight bowling restricting Hook to 95 all out in 38 overs and then the home side sensibly reaching 96 for 4 in 33.4 overs.

Brennan Martin (25) led by example alongside Keith James (22) and Jake Wicks (15) against Whitland bowlers Meyrick Rowlands (3 for 12), Paul Webb (1 for 19), Carl Smith (3 for 29), Jack Bowen (1 for 26) and Stuart Harries (2 for 7).

Martin also bowled well to take 2 for 14 in ten tight overs alongside Tom Blaxland (2 for 13) but Josh Watson (17), Paul Webb (21) and Kevin Pearce (20) laid the foundations for a Whitland win before Adam Davies and Jacob Lloyd were the not out batsmen at the finish.
