Rugby Forecasts

Fixtures 21st January 2012

(..to results page for these fixtures..)

After a dismal forecasting Saturday the previous week, things got a little better this weekend as I managed to get eight out of 11 forecasts correct.

I thought Cardigan were bankers to beat Pontarddulais and the Bont won their first match of the season – and Milford lost at home to Amman United when I thought the Mariners might just win.

I also got the St Clears versus Pembroke wrong and a delighted Pembroke coach Ossie Boswell (and a couple of the players) were delighted to point out the error of my ways – so well done Ossie and his Scarlet runners!

Division One (West):

Narberth v Llangennech
This is another tough hurdle for Narberth to overcome if they are to remain in top spot as they face a Llangennech side currently in fourth place and with the ability to play attractive rugby. Verdict: It should be an entertaining clash and I expect the Otters to avenge a 30-18 defeat in Llangennech.

Waunarlwydd v Whitland
Whitland will look to make it five league wins in a row as they travel to play Waunarlwydd, who are in eighth place but strong up front. Verdict: The Borderers beat ‘One Eyelid’ by 46-14 at Parc Llwyn Ty Gwyn and I think they will complete a double here!

Division Two (West):

Crymych v Kenfig Hill
After taking in top team Glynneath last Saturday Crymych face another tough test at Parc Lloyd Thomas against Kenfig Hill, who are currently second in the section table. Verdict: Kenfig won 61-12 at home and, sadly, they must be favourites to win again, but not by that sort of margin.

Division Three (West):

Pontarddulais v Haverfordwest
Pontarddulais caused an upset by beating Cardigan last Saturday but they will find Haverfordwest in no mood to surrender as the Blues seek to maintain their success at the top. Verdict: Haverfordwest to win their 13th win from 14 starts!

Tenby United v Cardigan
Both teams lost last weekend and will be eager to get back on the winning trail at Heywood Lane. Verdict: The Seasiders need to climb the table because they are not a bad side in this section but I think the Teifisiders will complete the double, having won by a massive 51-9 at home.

Division Four (West):

Milford Haven v Llanelli Wanderers
After losing narrowly to Amman United at The Observatory Field, Milford haven now face an even bigger challenge as table-topping Llanelli Wanderers are this Saturday’s visitors. Verdict: This is a match the Mariners must win if they are to retain their silverware aspirations and they will be eager to gain revenge for a 25-8 defeat in Llanelli earlier in the season.

Neyland v Furnace
Neyland are back at the Athletic Ground to play host to Furnace, to whom they lost 34-8 in the reverse fixture, looking to start getting a few wins together. Verdict: Furnace won 34-8 when the teams last met and, sadly, I think they might win again here!

Division Five (West):

Pembroke v Penygroes
Pembroke played really well at St Clears and so should start as hot favourites to beat Penygroes, who are two places below the Scarlets in seventh spot. Verdict: Pembroke won narrowly by 7-3 at Penygroes and I can’t see anything other than a double for Ossie Boswell’s boys.

Pontyates v Llangwm
Llangwm travel to Pontyates seeking a third win on the trot and in the knowledge that they slammed Ponty 35-5 at Pill Parks. Verdict: If Llangwm have anything like a full squad then they are hot favourites to win this one!

St Davids v Cefneithin
St Davids are currently struggling to play anything like a settled squad but will certainly have a team to play Cefneithin which will give 100%. Verdict: The Saints are finding it hard going and against Cefneithin I expect an away win here, but not by anything like the 76-0 defeat they suffered in Cefneithin.

St Clears v Pembroke Dock Harlequins
Both teams lost last Saturday but St Clears might feel confident after winning 26-15 at Bierspool, although they will find the Quins a much different proposition now. Verdict: It could go either way but I think the Quins might just edge it!

Nantgaredig v Fishguard & Goodwick
This is a vital top of the table clash for Fishguard since they are seven points behind Nantgaredig but with two matches in hand. Verdict: The Seagulls won 27-16 at The Moors and if they maintain their discipline and play to their considerable strengths they can take a big step to pouching the section silverware!
