Adam Raymond during the cricket season.Adam Raymond sends season’s greetings

A welcome returnee to Pembrokeshire over the Christmas and New Year period was Adam Raymond, taking a deserved rest from his work as a teacher of Year Six children at Llantwit Vardre Primary School, near Pontypridd in the Rhondda Cynon Taf district.

Adam was able to resume his acquaintance with his sporting pals in the Fishguard and Haverfordwest areas – and we at PembrokeshireSport.co.uk were delighted to collar him and find out a little more about how his footballing season at Taffs Well AFC is going.

Travel cut down immensely

Adam had joined the club situated neatly on the A470 between Pontypridd and Cardiff at the start of the season so that he could play near his home, which nestles in the shadow of Castell Coch, and is very close to Taffs Well’s ground at Rhiwdda. It provides him with easy travel to training sessions and to home matches, unlike his two previous seasons where he played for Newcastle Emlyn, whose manager, Wayne ‘Wolvesy’ Jones is a good friend of his and is now very much part of the coaching set-up at Haverfordwest County, where Adam also played in the past.

“I loved playing at Newcastle Emlyn,” admits Adam, “but the travel was proving too much. I contacted Taffs Well before the start of the season and I have been made very welcome by manager Lee Bridgeman and the squad. There are loads of very good young players there and at 24 I am one of the older players in the squad!”

So far this season he has played 15 matches, three of them on the bench (including a 4-3 win at Haverfordwest where he had hoped to play against his old team-mates!), mainly in the centre of midfield but with two games up front when the manager wanted to play a lone striker to hold the ball up. He has scored five goals, including good shots against AFC Porth and Cwmaman Athletic, and has helped Taffs Well to eighth place in the table but with as many as five games in hand over some of the teams above them. Their last match was a 1-1 draw with table topping Cambrian & Clydach and he is looking forward to playing at home against Haverfordwest County on the 14th January!

“It will be great to see Micky Ellis, ‘Wolvesy’ and the Haverfordwest players at Rhiwdda,” said Adam, “and we will be looking to complete the double over them.”

When the football season is over he has another sporting decision to make because he has played cricket as a very hard-hitting batsman for Haverfordwest in previous years and really enjoyed himself there.

“Some of our parents in school are involved with cricket in Llantwit Vardre and have asked if I fancy a regular game there,” Adam told us, “but I will probably have another season at The Racecourse with Huw Scriven, Karl Rhead and the boys before seeing how it goes. I love Pembrokeshire Cricket, where I have made good pals in a lot of clubs so it would be difficult to leave it now.”

Festive wishes

Over the festive period he has been enjoying himself with old Bluebirds’ mate Chris O’Sullivan and footballers from Goodwick United and Merlins Bridge.

We at PembrokeshireSport.co.uk are very happy to convey that message and we hope that, the Bluebirds’ game apart next week, Adam Raymond continues to do really well at Taffs Well AFC!
