Seasiders shine against the Barbarians
Tenby United 48 - Tenby Barbarians 7
The annual charity Boxing Day rugby match held in Tenby¹s Heywood Lane between Tenby United and Tenby Barbarians was a big success with a big crowd attending, despite the dreary weather. Tenby United eventually ran out victors with a flattering 48-7 score line which was harsh on a battling Barbarians side that stood up to the physical battle of Tenby United.
The game was sponsored by Coastal Cottages of Pembrokeshire¹ and proved to be physical with both sides giving 100% commitment in tricky conditions. The clinical United side scored a try in the opening few minutes of the game through prop Geoff Martin after a fine kick from fly half Toby Smith put play deep into Barbarians’ territory. Smith converted and coasted over the white line himself minutes later, with the Barbarians struggling early on in difficult conditions. Prop Geoff Martin crashed over once more and replacement Lloyd Thomas converted Wyndham Williams¹ try to leave the score 26-0 at half time.
Second half scores aplenty
In the second period the Barbarians made far fewer handling errors and when United had a man sent to the sin bin the Barbarians capitalised on their numerical advantage and scored their first try of the match, to the crowd¹s delight, through number eight Justin Richards, with veteran outside half Gavin Scotcher adding the conversion.
Although threatening to add to this score the Barbarians saw the hard-tackling Jack Guerreiro convert Tenby speedster James Criddle¹s try as the game became open. Tenby United ran in eight scores in total which left the final score 48-7. Captain Richard Rossiter touched down the final try before lifting the cup on behalf of his victorious team on what was a successful day for the fantastic cause and thanks must be given to the organisers as well as referee Eirian Edwards from Crymych.
Refreshment stands were present for supporters and there was an open buffet in Tenby Rugby Club after the game for everyone involved. The festive spirit of the players and spectators alike shone through in support of the Gareth Scotcher Trust Fund.
