Haverfordwest County Academy U14s make a winning start to Futsal
Congratulations to Phil Jones and the Under 14s from Haverfordwest County Academy in achieving victory in the first-ever West Wales Futsal Festival.
The under 12s and under 16s also gained valuable experience in this exciting new development in football and thanks also go to all the players and their parents who made the trip to Parc y Scarlets on the past two Sundays to participate in what was an interesting and absorbing start to futsal in the region.
Creative emphasis
Futsal is a game usually played indoors on a hard surface on a pitch 40 m x 20 m, with five players in each team one of which is the goalkeeper. There is a maximum number of seven substitutes who can replace players, one at a time, even when the ball is in play. The ball used is smaller than the usual match ball for adults (size 4) and is heavier, with less bounce.
There is an emphasis on improvisation, creativity and technique, as well as passing in small spaces. The game is played in a court marked by lines with no rebounds from walls etc., as in indoor five-aside football. Goals are the size and shape of a hockey goal and the game is very popular in South America and in Spain.
The games were played over two Sundays in the Indoor Training Barn at Parc y Scarlets and clubs put in two teams, although the table produced was for the A teams only.
The results (3 points for a win; 1 point for a draw) were as follows:

The next futsal festival is on 22nd January, 2012 in the Swansea area. Details will be on the website when they are available.
