Fixtures for 17th December 2011
Bruce Evans returns to action for the final week of his challenge with Bill Carne knowing that he is a vital point ahead and so able to go for the safe option in most cases. Last weekend he was watching Castres entertain Northampton Saints in European Rugby but this Saturday will see him waiting for the results of Pembrokeshire Clubs as he sits in the relative warmth of his French home. We wish Bruce every success!
Division One (West):
Bridgend Athletic v Whitland
BC: On form it has to be the Borderers to complete the double, who are in fourth place whilst the Athletic are tenth, and beat the Athletic 22-10 at home.
BE: Bridgend are not having a great season and I have to go for a Whitland win here.
Narberth v Tata Steel
BC: Narberth should edge it with home advantage, as Tata did with a 42-36 win earlier in the season – but I am going to take a chance and go for a win for the Steelmen!
BE: I’m going to go for Narberth here but they’ll need a big performance to do it. Tata Steel are in second place and have a very good away record.
Division Two (West):
Cwmllynfell v Crymych
BC: Crymych are gradually finding their feet in this tough section but third-placed Cwmllynfell are a bridge too far at the moment. They won 31-9 in Crymych and I expect them to complete the double here.
BE: Cwmllynfell are lying in third spot and despite a Crymych win last time out, I think this will be too tough a proposition away. A home win.
Division Three (West):
Penclawdd v Tenby
BC: Tenby beat Penclawdd 32-7 at home but I think the Cocklemen will gain revenge on Saturday!
BE: Penclawdd are having a good season and riding high in Division 3, and I think winning away there will be too big an ask for the Seasiders. A home win for the Cocklemen.
Cardigan v Newcastle Emlyn
BC: Cardigan lost 20-18 at Newcastle Emlyn but are hot favourites to gain revenge in this local derby – so I have to pick the Teifisiders.
BE: Cardigan ran the league leaders close last time out, and I think they will be too strong at home for Emlyn, despite it being a derby match. Cardigan to win.
Pontyberem v Haverfordwest
BC: Pontyberem are no mugs at home but I fully expect Haverfordwest to make it a double after a narrow 31-25 home win earlier in the campaign.
BE: Harford will be looking to maintain their five point lead going into the Xmas break. In my days playing for the Blues under Gelli James this was probably our toughest match, but the Pont are going through a lean spell and I take the Blues to win away.
Division Four (West):
Milford Haven v Neyland
BC: Neyland are bonny battlers but Milford are playing well and I have to go for a Mariners’ double since they already beat the All Blacks 16-11.
BE: I won’t be putting money on this one! Despite Milford being in third place and Neyland being second from bottom, there won’t be much in it, come the final whistle. Interesting that Neyland have the best defence in the bottom half of the league in terms of tries conceded so either they’re giving away too many penalties or not scoring enough tries? I’m going to go with home advantage, with Milford to keep the pressure on the top two.
Division Five (West):
Pembroke v Pontyates
BC: Pontyates have strengthened their squad of late but I think the Scarlets will still be too strong for them, having already beaten them 32-6 at Crickmarren.
BE: Pembroke should get a home win here and hope to break into the top four.
Llangwm v Nantgaredig
BC: Llangwm have some useful players but are not at full strength – so I believe the visitors will complete the double after a 34-3 home success.
BE: Maybe conditions will make this a low scoring match but I think the leaders will come out on top. A Nantgaredig win.
Cefneithin v Pembroke Dock Quins
BC: Cefneithin won 17-10 at Bierspool but I hope the Quins can reverse that result and help me overtake Mr Evans!
BE: The Quins are going a lot better but this is a tough place to go, and I think they need to focus on home wins. I predict a win for Cefneithin.
Penygroes v St Davids
BC: Sadly, I have to go for a Penygroes win but I hope the Saints prove me wrong!
BE: Last time I predicted an away win for Dewi Sant I came unstuck. This time I’m playing safe and going for a home win.
Swansea Uplands v Fishguard and Goodwick
BC: This is a match that could go either way as both teams are promotion contenders. The Seagulls won 23-0 at The Moors but I think that the Uplands might revenge that reverse by a narrow margin!
BE: This is the match of the day in League Five (West) and I’m going to stick my neck out and go for an away win, and see the Seagulls flying over Swansea Bay.
