Pembrokeshire KO Cup – Quarter Final
Scarlets edge into semis
Aberaeron 5 - Pembroke 6
Two first-half penalties by experienced full back Phil Williams helped Pembroke edge into the semi-finals of this season’s Pembrokeshire Knock Out Cup as they made the long midweek trek to Aberaeron and came home victorious after what coach Ossie Boswell called a ‘superb performance, especially in defence.’
Played under the floodlights on the Aberaeron pitch just overlooking the sea at Cardigan Bay, Williams slotted his two penalties as the Scarlets played well up front, ably led by skipper Mark Boswell and with Dai Beynon, Richard Mason, Sean Beynon and Tom Jones completing a resolute tight five.
The back row of Steve Dyde, Luke Hansford and No 8 Dom Colman were outstanding, especially in the second period, where a number of marginal decisions went against the visitors and put them under pressure.
Brave second-half defence
Aberaeron finally claimed their score when tight head prop Owen Williams ploughed over the line but the conversion was missed and although the homesters had other half chances there was some good covering by Mark and Phil Williams, Gary Pickering, Sean Dalling and Joe Jackson as half backs Andrew Davies and Simon Hooper tried to keep Aberaeron out of the danger zone with some resolute kicking.
The whole Scarlets side, including Jordan Gwilliam, who replaced Steve Dyde after the flanker sustained a stiff neck, never shirked a tackle and coach Boswell was understandably jubilant in his post-match summing up. Pembroke now take on Aberystwyth at Crickmarren in the semi-final, at a date to be arranged.
