Richard made rapid progress and played for Wales Schoolboys in 1998/1999 and became Welsh Schools Champion of 2000, representing Wales under 18s in 1998, 1999 and 2000. It was also a great thrill to be selected for Great Britain & Ireland at under 18 level in 2000.
Not content with that little lot, he also played for Wales under 21s in 2000, 2001 and 2002 – and played for the full Welsh men’s team from 2002 to 2004.
At one time Richard held four course records – at Conwy (68), St David’s City (65), Ashburnham (68) & Haverfordwest (63) but now only holds Haverfordwest and St David’s City.
Trophies and records galore
At his very best, Richard’s lowest handicap was an incredible plus 2.3 (that’s over two shots below scratch for you novices like us!) He won the Aberconwy trophy in 2002/2003 and still hold the lowest four-round total for that event at seven under par. He already has an amazing FOUR holes in one – all at Haverfordwest and including the par-four 17th hole!
Add the fact that he became Dyfed County Champion in 2002, 2003 and 2006, has been club Champion at Haverfordwest on five occasions and captained Haverfordwest’s first team to three ‘Super Six’ championship titles.
Ask him about his favourites and you’d discover the following:
Favourite golf course – Ballybunion (Ireland)
Favourite Pro – Sergio Garcia
Favourite pro event – The Masters
Taken on top players
Apart from travelling all over the world representing Wales, his highlight has to be playing for the Great Britain and Ireland team at Turnberry, when he was able to beat European Tour star Alexander Noren from Sweden. But he has also played with several current European tour stars like Nick Dougherty, Nicholas Collsaerts, Martin Laird, Camilo Villegas, Gareth Maybin, Stuart Manley, Rhys Davies, Raymond Russell, Gabriel Hjertstedt and Mark Warren. – so it is easy to see our new correspondent Richard Scott has quite a golfing pedigree! |
