The 2011 Tenderfoot Team Winners.
Tenderfoot are Welsh disabled champions for third year in a row
Once again two teams of disabled athletes from Pembrokeshire recently competed in the Welsh Disabled Sports Team Championships held at the Newport International Sports Village and emulated their achievements of last year as they came away with the first place team award.
Team Captain for the main Tenderfoot Team was James Dash (Spittal) and he set the standards for the day by attaining second place in the Basketball with fellow competitors Jonathan Hubbard (Kilgetty) and Brian Quinlan (Narberth).
Excellent performances
The team came first and second in the Table Tennis with Tim Heaps (Llandewi Velfrey) and Lynsey McCarthy (Milford Haven) contesting the final. The Tenderfoot team was also first and second in the New Age Kurling thanks to the winning team of John and Angie Richards (Broad Haven) and Jonathan Hubbard, with second place going to the team of Priscilla Williams (Narberth), Simon and Kimberley Woolley (Kilgetty). Second place also went to the Pool team with Wayne Llewellyn (Llandisilio) narrowly missing out in the final and second place in the Weight Lifting came thanks to Richard Young (Penally), Darren Briggs (Milford Haven) and Brian Quinlan.
The second team, under the captaincy of Donna Emery (Narberth), came a creditable third in the Football Shoot-out, along with fellow competitors Matthew Boyd (Haverfordwest), Francis Corbett (Narberth) and Marion Haymer (Broadmoor).
Rotary are delighted
The Tenderfoot Team was formed in conjunction with the Rotary Clubs of Saundersfoot and Tenby who undertook the ten-week training for this year’s competition, ably assisted in the transport arrangements by the Rotary Clubs of Haverfordwest and Narberth and Whitland, with a strong contingent from the Saundersfoot, Tenby and Narberth and Whitland Clubs travelling to Cwmbran to support the teams. The Rotary Clubs can be justifiably proud of the fact that they are the only Clubs in Wales to undertake training for the disabled.
Team Managers, Rotarians Charles Hopkinson and Brian Waters of the Rotary Club of Saundersfoot, could hardly contain their emotions, being extremely pleased with the dedication shown by all team members, particularly as the standard of competition was so high this year. There was, however, a tinge of sadness with Rotarians from Saundersfoot following the loss earlier in the year of Clifton John, who was one of the main supporters of the team and this year’s win was dedicated to his memory.
Tenderfoot will recommence training at the Tenby Leisure Centre in September next year where new entrants would be encouraged to participate. Further information about Tenderfoot is available from Rotarian Charles Hopkinson on (01834) 813433.
