Jacob keeps his British title
A young Pembrokeshire Boccia player has regained his British Boccia crown as Jacob Thomas, from Bethesda, came out top once again at the 2011 GB Boccia Championships at the weekend.
The 16 year-old, who attends Pembrokeshire College, competed against 10 others players in the sport’s BC3 category.
After winning through the group stages, Jacob won his semi final last Sunday before going on to play fellow GB team mate Scott McCowan in the final - which he won by two points after a tie break.
The competition was held at the Sports Wales National Centre in Cardiff and was hosted by Disability Sport Wales and Boccia Wales.
Huw is delighted
Congratulating Jacob, Councillor Huw George Cabinet Member for Children and Young People said it was a wonderful achievement.
“Jacob is an outstanding sportsman and has worked very hard to get where he is today,” he said.
“We are all very proud of him and wish him all the best in his future competitions.”
Jacob has been playing Boccia for seven years and, as well as his Welsh and British titles, is also a member of the GB elite Boccia squad.
Superb performances
At the recent CPISRA (Cerebral Palsy Sports and Recreation Association) Boccia World Cup he came sixth in his category.
Based on boules, boccia was originally developed for people with cerebral palsy but is now played by people of all abilities and disabilities.
So popular has it become in Pembrokeshire that there is now a club – the Crymych Panthers - plus several 5x60 school clubs and an estimated 30-plus players.
