Guidelines

All players should start at Dragon 1 unless their Club Coach recommends starting at a higher level. To progress it is essential that players are considered able to attempt the next level with a reasonable prospect of success.  The Dragon Lead Coach will make this assessment at the end of the course.  It is not unusual for players to pass, but be recommended to re-take that level again next year to strengthen their skills.  Dragon coaching is designed to teach/coach all aspects of the game of Cricket, so that although players may be quite strong in some, they still have to satisfy the Coaches that overall their skills are good enough to go on to the next level.

Dragon 1 - Players may come mainly from schools and only have Kwik Cricket experience.  The emphasis is on teaching them to hold a bat correctly, bowl an over arm ball, catch, throw and field correctly.  It is all softball work so no equipment is necessary.  Advice on equipment is freely available to ensure it is bought sensibly – a lot of money can easily be wasted at this age.

Dragon 2 - Progression to Dragon level 3 is only possible if players are able to hold a bat properly, hit the ball cleanly and bowl a ball satisfactorily, as well as knowing the rudiments of good fielding practice.  Practice at home is quite important at this stage.  Players often want their own kit by now, so please ask the coaches for advice.

Dragon 3 – Players are coached at this level rather than taught, which is why they must have mastered the basics to get this far.  Hard balls are introduced so some protective equipment becomes necessary to ensure safety of players.

Dragon 4 – At this level a lot of new batting shots and bowling techniques need to be mastered.  Strategies and captaincy are discussed, as well as improving skills in the field.

Dragon 5 – Players will already be playing Regional cricket if they achieve this level, and will have developed levels of excellence in some aspects of the game. Coaching is somewhat more sophisticated.

ASSESSMENT

This is made by the Lead Coach in conjunction with his assistants and is a combination of objective test results and subjective appraisal.  Certificates are awarded for both Pass levels, but the Pass(R) does not allow automatic progression to the next Dragon level.

RESULTS

PASS           Considered capable of attempting the next level of Dragon Coaching.

Pass(R)       but recommend re-taking the same level next year.

Not ready to progress to the next level; parts of the game need strengthening.

Non-Pass   indicates some weaknesses that need to be addressed, or, particularly in the case of young players, that they are physically not ready for progress to the next level.  Sometimes caused by inattentiveness or poor discipline.

Fail               almost certainly due to non-attendance rather than any other reason.  If you are not there you cannot be assessed properly, so please try to attend the full course next time.
