With both teams having plenty of experienced players this was always going to be about which of them performed the best alongside some talented young players and in the final analysis it was Scott Arthur who deservedly won the man of the match award, presented by Mike Leighs, as he scored 37 and 49 not out to steer Cresselly home. One of their youngest players, Iwan Izzard, also caught the eye with two steady knocks and a vital piece of fielding as he made a direct hit on the stumps from a narrow angle to run out Haverfordwest’s best batsman, Phil Kirkby, just when the big feller had struck five boundaries and looked likely to take his team to a big first-innings score after skipper Richard Scriven had elected to bat first. Bowled and fielded wellCresselly also bowled and fielded a little better throughout the match, with Sam Harts bowling two maidens in his 1 for 15 spell in the first innings, and Richard Harris also picking up 1 for 16 so that Haverfordwest were never able to build up a momentum as Sion Jenkins and Matthew Lewis took return catches in their bowling stints. Steve Phillips (17), Kirkby (28) and Julian James (20) were the main run-getters for The Town but a final tally of 98 for 6 was about 30 fewer than they would have hoped.

More even second inningsHaverfordwest’s second innings saw Steve Phillips (35) and Richard Scriven (12) open well before Kirkby gave the innings impetus with 48 runs off 46 balls, including two fours and three big sixes, before he was well caught by Tom Arthur off top-trier Matthew Lewis. Adam Raymond also scored 14 not out and a total of 123 for 4 was more like a par score – but set Cresselly just 102 runs to win. Haverfordwest needed quick wickets to make any real impact but Scott Arthur and Neal Williams advanced the score to 43 before Williams was again run out for 26 in the tenth over. Cresselly also lost skipper Nick Davies shortly afterwards but Arthur raised the tempo alongside Iwan Izzard to such a degree that they made sure of victory with 11 balls still in hand. Arthur was undefeated on 49, with three fours and two sixes, whilst Izzard supported with 22 not out to help Cresselly to a deserved eight-wicket success. There was a minute’s silence before the match in memory of former umpire, Terry Sandy.

When Cresselly batted they had a solid start from Scott Arthur and Neal Williams until the latter was run out for 22, and Arthur marched on until he was finally caught by Julian James off James Morris, who looked The Town’s best bowler. But with cameos from Nick Davies (10), Iwan Izzard (14) and Alex Bailey (13 not out) Cresselly took their total to 119 for 5 and a healthy first innings lead of 21 runs.
