Paul powers his way to Welsh long-distance title It nicely completed a very successful day for the Pembrokeshire Velo Cycling because they claimed three of the top six places as Cliff Jackson, also of Pembroke Dock finished with an impressive fourth place and Tenby rider Nick Brown followed close behind to wrap up sixth spot in a high class field of cyclists from around the country. The trio’s combined mileage of 779.68 miles easily earned them the team prize with and was reported to be a new championship record in an event with a considerable history. Paul was understandably delighted with his performance (and quite surprised to find himself in first place but said his achievement would never have been possible without the help of wife Jill and son Danny, who looked after him throughout the marathon event. He told PembrokeshireSport.co.uk . . .“They were brilliant because as very good cyclists themselves they knew when I would need food, and especially lots of water in the searing heat, but also when to gee me up when I felt tired. It was very hot and, like runners in marathon races, when I hit ‘The Wall’ it was very important that their encouragement, and sometimes bossiness urged me on. They also kept it quiet that I was well in front until late on in the 12 hours, just at a time when I needed another pick-me-up. “I have been competing in this event for around 15 years so it is very nice to pick up the silverware as a veteran – and hopefully show others that there is a sporting life at 50!” “It was really great that we also won the team event with a record time and I am delighted for Cliff and Nick as well. It really was a great day for the old-timers in our sport!” Pembrokeshire Velo are holding training rides and time trials suitable for all abilities and would welcome any local cyclists to get in touch and join them for a ride, for any further information please visit www.pembs-velo.co.uk

Paul Colman stormed to first place in the recent Welsh 12-hour Time Trial, held around the Abergavenny area, with an extremely strong ride, on a day where heat exhaustion put end to many riders’ efforts. The Pembroke Dock veteran’s distance of 267.62 miles gave him a very comfortable margin of over 5 miles back to the second-placed rider, and it also earned him a new all-time club record in the discipline.
