Al Gordon retires from Pembrokeshire Snooker League committeeAl Gordon’s been great for snooker

When the Pembrokeshire Snooker League holds its annual general meeting on the 15th August it will mark the stepping down from office of one of the game’s great characters in the county.

Al Gordon first joined the committee as long ago as forty years, the last twenty five of them as Hon Treasurer, and he says that handing over the financial reins will allow him to focus on his playing of the game with the Balfour Club ‘B’ team – not bad going for a sprightly eighty year old!

Al is joined in the ‘B’ team by David Morgan, Ian Ashworth, Andy Roach and Denzil Davies, plus Richard ‘Willie’ Williams as their ‘supersub’!  He still enjoys the weekly matches and admits that there is less pressure than when he competed in the higher echelons.

Hard-working triumvirate

Ask Al about his involvement in local snooker and he would say that he has been very lucky in having Malcolm King for all that time, plus another five years, whilst Howard Webber has been the other part of a hard-working triumvirate!

When Al started the funds weren’t in as healthy a state and he always had to pay for the trophies at the start of the following season – something he soon remedied as he had the bright idea to create a fixtures list which had room aplenty for adverts.  This was followed by a registration book, which also included a number of adverts – and some wonderful sponsorship from Mr Alan Bland of Bland’s Motors over the past fifteen years.  This will end at the same time as Al stands down – but he is delighted that there is a new sponsor in Eddie’s.

New starts and a happy ending

This year has seen Pembroke Power Station go from strength to strength as newcomers in the second division, winning a pile of silverware, whilst the first division saw ............... as champions.  Al was delighted to see another successful season tucked away as he rounded off his amazing twenty five years as Hon Treasurer, when he helped present the trophies.

Everyone involved in snooker in Pembrokeshire owes Al Gordon a huge debt of gratitude – and PembrokeshireSport.co.uk wishes him many more years of enjoying his playing involvement because he is a real gentleman of sport!
