Ian Sefton - run out. National Village Cup Competition - Quarter Final:

Carew run out of good fortune

Carew (197 all out)
lost to Dumbleton (214 for 6)

Umpires: Trefor Evans & Denis Chiffi.

Scorers: Mike Scourfield (Carew) and Kevin Davies (Skewen).

Carew’s hopes of a visit to Lord’s for the final of the National Village Cup Final were cruelly smashed as they lost at home to Dumbleton by 17 runs.

The collective look on the Carew team’s faces said it all, not least because they knew that victory in this quarter-final tie was sometimes in their grasp as they limited the Gloucestershire-village side to a reachable target but then suffered five run outs, the first three all at vital times when Carew looked as if they were beginning to stamp their authority on events.

Gareth Lewis hits a boundary. The other two came late in the game as they tried to snatch things out of the fire and it was evident that the only area where Dumbleton were clearly better than Carew was in the field!

Fish gives Dumbleton a solid start

Carew skipper Robert Hicks called correctly at the toss and invited Dumbleton, who brought with them a lot of support on two buses, to bat first. Scott Helmich struck early as he had John Fish caught by Brian Hall for three runs but Dumbleton showed their pedigree as Nick Holland scored 52 after a slow start, including a four and two sixes, before Ceri Brace had him well caught by keeper Adam Hughes, Holland found support from Rupert Salmon, who had reached 34 before he was run out when Brace deflected the ball onto the stumps at the bowler’s end, Jamie Bill (34), Liam Brignall (37) and Nigel Stanton (10).

Dumbleton looked likely to reach 240+ at one stage when they were on 177 for 3 but tight bowling from Scott Helmich and Tom Richards in their second spells kept them down to 214 for 6, which was certainly a manageable target if Carew batted at the top of their form.

Looking good – and then not so good!

Robbie Hicks - clean bowled.Carew reached 20 without alarm as Ian Sefton and Nick Scourfield made a solid start but the latter was adjudged lbw to Fish for 12 – but Sefton was joined by Gareth Lewis in a productive stand of 48 where both looked in very good nick. Sefton had dumped two balls straight into the gardens with lovely timing and also had two fours in his 38 but he looked for a quick single which wasn’t there and keeper Liam Brignall was delighted to run him out from a good flat throw.

It was a body blow for Carew but worse was to follow ten runs later when Gareth Lewis suffered a similar fate, this time from a direct hit on the stumps as he failed to make a single, and when skipper Hicks was bowled by David Johnstone for seven runs, Carew looked far less assured on 83 for 4 wickets.

Carew battle in vain

It is to Carew’s credit that they refused to submit as Tim Hicks and Tom Richards began the rebuilding of the innings as they put on 51 runs, always up with the clock, but Hicks was bowled around his legs by  Nigel Stanton for a fine 48, which included two sixes and three fours. Richards, however, found another willing partner in Brian Hall, who used his experience to good effect. Again it looked as if Carew were en route to success but at 162 Richards was caught on the short boundary for 23 – and 18 runs later lost Hall, when he was looking good on 29, again run out in search of a short single!

Scott Helmich was adjudged lbw as Dumbleton applied late pressure and Carew went nap in terms of run outs as Rhys Davies sought a sharp single but also departed to a good throw – and Adam Hughes was run out from a boundary throw seeking a second run with last man Ceri Brace. These dismissals just about summed up Carew’s day but they provided real entertainment and showed their usual excellent organisational skills, with a splendid programme, excellent food and a welcome that Dumbleton will surely remember for a long time!

Tim Hicks blasts a big six.
