The 2011 Harrison-Allen Final : Preview
( . . . to Cup Final Preview )
Haverfordwest Cricket Club : |
|
|
Huw Scriven Aged 37 Process Operator Currently in his third season of captaincy and county skipper this season – and has already led the team to success in the DR Morris Cup. Regarded by many as still the best keeper in the county and ‘Scriv’ isn’t averse to a bit of late-order slogging when the occasion calls! This will be his tenth Harrison-Allen Bowl final. |
|
Karl Rhead Aged 37 Process Operator The ‘thinking man’ of the team and a great tactical help as vice captain. ‘Reggie’ is still one of the more prolific batsmen in the county, with his ability to play straight or hit big. An excellent fielder and all-round sportsman who has trophies galore in football, this will be his eighth final |
|
Danny Potter Aged 29 Local Government Officer ‘Potts’ has yet to recapture his superb form of the past few seasons but is still capable of scoring big runs, as he proved with 130 in a recent division two match. Loves to field in the gully and enjoy a bit of ‘chat’ with the opposition but he has tempered his caustic wit a little since experiencing fatherhood! His third final here. |
|
Simon Holliday Aged 37 Child Psychologist Joined Haverfordwest last season and scored runs aplenty as a right-handed batsman and also took wickets with his canny left-arm spinners – and he has scored even more runs this campaign. ‘Doc’ played in the Bowl Final last campaign and will be eager to improve on that performance – and says that he could write a book about the antics of his colleagues in the changing room! |
|
Dai Davies Aged 26 Railway Worker ‘Dapper’ is a key all-rounder with his ability to score runs quickly as a right-handed batsman, as he proved in the semi-final, and bowl his accurate medium pace stuff as a back-up for his captain. In his fifth final, Dai is a brilliant runner between the wickets and arguably the best fielder in the team, and has also played Welsh Premier League football for Haverfordwest County. |
|
Ben Field Aged 32 Sports Development Manager Playing in his third final, Ben is rightly regarded as one of the classiest right-handed batsmen in the county and, as one of his team-mates said, is enjoying a great period between injuries. Scored an excellent 38 not out in the semi-final at a vital time and is useful in the field, although he does sometimes manage to make easy catches look hard! As Sports Development Manager he is at the hub of all local sport. |
|
Dan Field Aged 36 Sports Development Officer The older, and he says better looking, of the Field lads who is also involved in sports development across the county. Dan is a very destructive striker of the ball as a right-handed batsman who showed his explosive power with an innings of 115 out of a 160 total this season. He will be playing in his fourth final and is no slouch in the field either, with a good pair of catching hands – from his days as a good rugby player! |
|
Nathan Banner Aged 19 Unemployed ‘Banjo’ joined Haverfordwest from Herbrandston and has quickly settled into the side as a very useful all-rounder, following dad Nigel and granddad Glyn. Bowled really well in the semi-final and is a very big striker of the ball as a right handed batsman. This will be his first final and at the end of the season he puts away his whites and plays as a no-nonsense defender in football. |
|
Adam James Aged 21 Carpenter One of the characters of the team who only knows how to give 100%, as he showed in the DR Morris final, where he scored runs, took wickets and held an amazing boundary catch to live up to his ‘Buckets’ nickname. ‘Jamer’ loves to bowl fast and hit the ball many a mile, scoring 22 from five balls in the DR Morris final – and looking forward to his second Bowl final with relish. |
|
Clive Tucker Aged 39 Car Parts Manager The ‘wily old fox’ of the team who has played first team cricket for almost 20 years and will be playing in his 11th final. His canny off-spin, often used at the start of the innings, dumfounds batsmen and he is in a rich vein of form, having taken 2 for 18 in his six semi-final overs. Known to his team-mates as ‘Bibban’ he says that he is a far better batsman than his regular No 11 spot would suggest! |
|
Jonathan Strawbridge Aged 20 Lifeguard ‘Strawbs’ was a newcomer to the team last year but missed the final because of injury – and will be hoping to steer clear of any further damage so that he can make his Bowl final debut. He is a very straight and long hitter of the ball who can open the batting or go in for a late thrash – and doubles up as a good bowler when his back is OK. |
|
Richard James Another slightly injury-prone character who lays claim to being the team’s pin-up as well as being a lovely stroke player who can hit the ball to all parts of the field. He is useful as the team’s second wicket-keeper whenever his skipper is unavailable – and a good man to have in the field. Doubles up as a very gritty scrum half with Haverfordwest RFC, where his angelic looks belie his strong play! |
|
Chris Phillips Aged 21 Accountant ‘Bones’ is a useful all-rounder because he can bowl pace or spin and his batting is very under-rated because he can score runs in tight finishes. One of the best club-men for The Town with his willingness to play anywhere in any team – and a very good all-rounder because he is a Welsh champion weight-lifter and bowls player, and plays football for the club in the winter! |
|
Jayne Phillips Scorer Arguably the most experienced scorer in the county who shows her terrific loyalty to her team by travelling down from Briton Ferry to score every match – and gets more nervous than the players in finals. Jayne is an operating theatre nurse who keeps fit by cycling to work each day – an eight-mile round trip with many a hill! Amazingly, this will be her ??? final as The Town’s scorer. |
Neyland Cricket Club : |
|
![]() |
Andrew Miller Aged 37 Chemical Engineer at Power Station ‘Windy’ is one of the most respected captains in the county, having led Neyland for over a decade and still holding total respect from his young team. He is a good reader of the game and is a very stylish right-handed batsmen who topped the county’s charts last season, as well as being a key wicket-taker with his canny slow stuff. If he plays well in the final then Neyland will do well! |
![]() |
Gregg Miller Aged 35 Cargo Inspector Right-hand man to his older brother and a right-handed bat who can score runs from the opener’s berth when his confidence is high, as it was in the semi-final win over Carew. ‘Greggo’ is also a useful pace bowler and definitely one of the best fielders in the county, with his speed over the ground and ability to take big catches. A very good all-round sportsmen, he also plays full back for Neyland RFC. |
![]() |
Paul Murray Aged 23 Accountant ‘Minty’ is rightly regarded as one of the top three batsmen in Pembrokeshire at the moment with his ability to play strokes to all parts of the ground. He has scored centuries this campaign and if he plays a big innings in the final then Neyland will be strong because others can play off his speedy run accumulation. He is also good in the field and is no mean wicket-keeper when the need arises – and definitely a key player in Neyland’s battle plans! |
![]() |
Nick Koomen Aged 21 Factory Worker If there was an award for the most improved player over the past year then Nick Koomen would win it! ‘Kooms’ has developed into a real stroke-maker who can swing a game, as he did in the semi-final with an excellent 44 not out to see his team home against Carew. He is also a very useful bowler and certainly adds variety to Neyland’s bowling attack! |
![]() |
Ashley Sutton Aged 18 Student Another of the talented young players who look likely to make Neyland a force for years to come, with his ability to score runs in the middle order and also bowl pace when needed. Known to his team-mates as ‘Pup’, Ashley is a Welsh international at junior level and also a very good outside half in rugby – and he will be missed if he is unavailable for the final because of other commitments. |
![]() |
Henry Durrant Aged 21 Student Yet another of the excellent all-round young sportsmen in the team, Henry is a very good footballer as well as being an asset on the cricket pitch. His left-arm pace bowling gives Neyland a spear-head for their attack and he is also a forceful batsman as an added bonus so they will be hoping that he will be OK for the final because of other commitments. Very quick in the field and says he is the male pin-up of the team! |
![]() |
Andrew Slark Aged 27 Carpenter ‘Slarkie’ is one of the more under-rated players in the Neyland squad but there is a refreshing no-nonsense approach to Andrew Slark’s batting because he knows what he wants to do and gets on with it. Bats in the lower middle order, with the ability to hit big or keep an end up – and another who uses his rugby skills to good effect with his catching in the field! |
![]() |
Paul Miller Aged 23 Management Consultant The third member of the Miller dynasty to play for Neyland and as the baby of the trio is eager to stamp his own personality on play as a very good batsmen and excellent fielder. He has also used his man-management and negotiating skills to help Neyland really develop off the pitch – and has been an inspirational chairman of the Pembrokeshire Association of Cricket Coaches. |
![]() |
Sean Hannon Aged 23 Roof Truss Designer The first of the Hannon twins and he is a very good wicket-keeper with the ability to swing a match with a couple of sharp stumpings, and no mean batsman either as he sometimes opens the innings on Saturdays. Now known as ‘Seanie’ because it is a pet name given by his beloved, but has sadly had to drop out of the race to be the team’s ‘gigolo’ because of that commitment! Doubles up as Hon Sec of Neyland AFC. |
![]() |
Patrick Hannon Aged 23 Assistant Manager (Retail) The other member of the ‘Deadly Duo’ and like his brother, gives nothing less than 100% for Neyland in cricket and football. ‘Paddy’ usually opens the bowling and is very accurate so keeps pressure on batsmen early on, is a useful right-handed batsmen and excellent fielder, where he uses his goalkeeping skills to pluck tricky catches out of the air. Like his brother, has been smitten by romance, but still finds time to coach the juniors well! |
![]() |
Gary Lloyd Aged 48 Shipwright Now the patriarchal figure of the team, Gary has been a very influential off-spin bowler for many years, and come out of retirement more times than Frank Sinatra! He is quite happy to open the bowling and tease batsmen into making errors, or tie them up at the finish, but is certainly still in the top three spin bowlers in the county – and one of the most popular players, too. ‘Gadgie’ was also a very good footballer in his younger days. |
![]() |
Scott Jones Aged 13 Student Scot is arguably the most talented youngster to emerge from the Neyland camp for many years and he has already shown his maturity in several first team games this season as a very good spin bowler and stylish batsman who will score many more runs when he gets physically stronger. ‘Scottie’ is a current Welsh international cricketer, a great footballing prospect and no mean rugby player either! |
![]() |
Scott John Aged 26 Teacher Scott now teaches ‘up the line’ but still travels home to represent Neyland whenever he can as a very good stroke-making batsmen who at one time was a more than useful keeper but now very adept in the field, like most Neyland players. He says he is the most intelligent player in the team, now that he is a teacher, and the best looking - and we daren’t tell you what some of the others think of that. |
![]() |
Patrick Bellerby Aged 19 Student A very useful cricketing all-rounder who just missed out on a final place two seasons ago – and likely to feature in possible selection for the final squad this season. ‘Paddy’ is a more than useful batsmen who can also bowl – and one certainly to watch for the future. |
![]() |
John Tennick Aged 32 Process Operator Another good all-round sportsmen as a strong-hitting batsmen who can also bowl and field well, and also an excellent back row player in rugby for both Neyland and Narberth. Could find a place in the side if others drop out and, like his dad, Mike, can only give 100% in his team’s cause. |
![]() |
John Laugharne/Jenny Seaton Scorers Neyland have a more than useful scoring combination in John Laugharne and Jenny Seaton. John is a former player and great stalwart who scores the book whilst Jenny, who is much younger and far better-looking, does the technical stuff on the electronic scoreboard. John played in Bowl finals many years ago but for Jenny this will be her first appearance – and both are a credit to Neyland CC! |

The Umpires . . . |
|
| The Pembrokeshire Association of Cricket Umpires & Scorers have decided which umpires will enjoy the honour of officiating at the 2011 Harrison-Allen Bowl Final and they have chosen two highly respected umpires, who really have the respect of local players, and for both of whom it will be their first appearance in the final. | |
![]() |
Arthur Brady Aged 68 Originally hails from Carew, where he played as a nipper before his work in the police force kept him away from the game, other than playing for the Pembrokeshire Police team. Arthur has lived in Haverfordwest since 1965 so can now almost consider himself a ‘Longneck’! He took up umpiring in 2000 and wishes that he had done the job many years sooner because he loves the game – and has earned a reputation as a very good umpire with a down to earth approach. His other leisure interest is in the Haverfordwest Male Voice Choir. |
![]() |
Denis Chiffi Aged 60 Denis originates from Tenby, where he still lives, and in his younger days he was rightly regarded as a very good hooker with Tenby United RFC, never afraid to get involved and always giving 100%. He certainly adopted the same approach at Cresselly, where he played his cricket for many years and more recently has done invaluable work on the ground alongside Glyn Cole. Since taking up umpiring Denis has quickly become a very good official who just gets on with his role and expects players to do the same. We wish both smashing fellers a very enjoyable day out in their first Bowl final |
