Skelfayre Ladies Cricket Cup Final:

Skelfaye Cup winners Burton Ladies.Tipping the Scales for Burton Ladies

Burton Ladies (127 for 7 & 90 for 5) beat Hook Ladies (102 for 2 & 81 for 2)

Umpires: Dennis Chiffi & Phil Marsden.

Scorers: Dianne Morris & Joy James.

Venue: Cresselly Cricket Club.

Player of the Match: Kath Adams (Hook Ladies).

Outstanding performances by Elaine Scale and her daughters, Finola and Wella, helped Burton Ladies beat their counterparts from Hook in an entertaining Ladies Cup Final where the players from both teams overcame the cold, damp conditions to brighten up the day for their hardy bands of supporters.

Runners-up Hook Ladies.Elaine, who has long been one of the best lady cricketers in Pembrokeshire, scored 53 and 14, Finola bowled well and contributed 13 and 42 runs, whilst Wella batted really well in the middle order with innings of 27 and 20 runs.

But this was an all-round team effort that will have pleased coach Brian Griffiths and team manager Chris Campbell, not least because their team produced something of a surprise since they are currently bottom of the table whilst Hook Ladies should have the consolation for defeat by becoming league champions.

Burton inspired by the Scales

Burton Ladies paced their first innings well and with Elaine Scale rapping four boundaries in her 53, sharing in stands with Finola (18) and Wella (55), they scored a highly challenging 126 for 7. This included 15 extras, despite excellent bowling for Hook by Kath Adams, who claimed 4 for 24 as well as taking an outstanding catch, with a wicket apiece from Alice Thomas and Sam Rossiter.

Elaine Scale raises the trophy aloft. Sam stars but Hook still in arrears

Hook’s response centred on Sam Rossiter, who stroked three fours in her 66 not out, sharing an unbroken third-wicket partnership of 645 with Kath Adams after Jo Kerrison and Leanne Jones had both been bowled by Ffion Ashman, who finished with superb figures of 2 for 18 as reward for her efforts. But they were unable to match Burton’s run rate as Steffi Campbell led by example as keeper, with only four extras conceded, and the rest of their fielders also did well. As a result, Hook ended their allotted 20 overs on 102 for 2, still 24 runs in arrears despite having eight wickets in hand.

Burton build a big lead

Burton again opened steadily before Elaine Scale was bowled by Alice Thomas, who also shifted Steffi Campbell soon afterwards, but Wella Scale (20) joined her sister Finola (42) in a productive partnership which formed the backbone of the innings.
Player of the match kath Adams with Denis Chiffi. Hayley Thomas (2 for 28), Leanne Jones (1 for 31), Ffion Ashman (0 for 13) and especially Alice Thomas (2 for 17) all bowled well for Hook but Burton’s 90 for 5 meant that Hook Ladies needed 115 runs to win.

Hook unable to match required run rate

It was a big target which wasn’t helped by the damp conditions but Jo Kerrison and Sam Rossiter gave the innings a solid start without ever getting anywhere near  the required run rate. They put on 60 before Kerrison was run out from a good throw by Zoe Davies, having scored 25. Again Burton bowled tight lines and although Sam Rossiter batted throughout the innings for her 41 not out they finished on 81 for 2 so that Burton could celebrate victory by 33 runs.

Kath is player of the match

Burton Ladies’ skipper Elaine Scale received the Skelfayre Trophy from Mrs Gill Huxley and Burton were clearly delighted to be cup winners after missing out on even a final appearance for the past nine years.

Umpires Dennis Chiffi & Phil Marsden. The player of the match adjudicators were umpires Denis Chiffi and Phil Marsden, with Dennis saying it was one of the most enjoyable matches he had ever officiated at – and they decided that Kath Adams should be the deserved recipient for her bowling, batting and fielding contribution to the Hook Ladies’ cause!
