Bluebirds start season with a comfortable victory over Risca United

Haverfordwest County got their pre-season friendlies off to a perfect start with a comfortable victory over Risca United at the Conygar Bridge Meadow Stadium.
The home side led one-nothing at half time with Anton Owens scoring early. The visitors equalised through former Bluebird Paul Michael midway through the second period.
But the Bluebirds proved the fitter side and finished with three well-taken goals scored by Luke Robinson, Jay Brockway and Richard Ryan all marking impressive debuts.
The home side broke the deadlock around the 18th minute. Risca goalkeeper Mark Mears handled the ball outside his area, from the subsequent free-kick from Chris O’Sullivan the ball was fumbled and gifted an easy debut goal for right-sided midfielder Anton Owens.
Strikers looking sharp
The Bluebirds front pairing of Nicky Woodrow and Richard Ryan looked sharp in the first period. Midway through the first half Woodrow unleashed a cracking shot that saw Mears produce a superb diving stop.
The visitors equalised through former Bluebird Paul Michael in 63rd minute. The central midfielder and player manager curled the ball beautifully past the outstretched Martin Langdon. Two minutes later Langdon pulled off a brilliant stop to deny Risca taking the lead, the keeper diving low to his right to palm a low drive from Rob Aldridge.
Noses back in front
However, the Bluebirds got their noses back in front when lively striker Luke Robinson scored from close range. Within two minutes the hosts extended their lead when Jay Brockway fired a firm shot in the middle of the net and give his side a bit of breathing space against the Welsh League Division Three opponents.
Right at the death Ryan scored with predatory finish from close range thanks to a good cross-supplied by O’Sullivan.
Next Saturday Haverfordwest County entertain Welsh Premier outfit Port Talbot, kick off is at 3pm.
