Sporting Snippets – June 2011

An old Otter in Snow White’s Clothing!

You might be forgiven for looking at the picture opposite this little article and thinking it is of an attractive young maiden, perhaps appearing as Snow White in a local pantomime.

But I can reveal that it is not the famous friend of the Seven Dwarves but a well known Narberth character who is still very proud of his association after many years as a hard-grafting forward with the Otters (and a bit of round-arm bowling with Narberth Cricket Club right next door!).

He can also be seen behind the bar at the Lewis Lloyd Ground and does an excellent job as chairman (at least, that’s what he keeps telling me!) but his much better half is the real worker on the club’s behalf.

I understand that he doesn’t mind dressing up in something feminine for a good cause – so when you see him around Narberth ask him if he’s got any other good pictures to show you!

‘Evs’ is still going strong

Staying in Narberth for a little longer, we really must congratulate Nick Evans on reaching his 70 th birthday and still playing more cricket to a higher standard than many players half his age.

‘Evs’, as he is known in local cricket circles, still turns out regularly for Narberth 2nds, the Welsh over 60s and a few English county senior teams touring all over the world, and is still taking more than his share of wickets with his canny off-spin.

He still shows the enthusiasm of players 50 years his junior so happy birthday Nick Evans – and long may you continue to keep going!

Sportsman goes a cropper – off a horse!

We look next at a well-known and highly respected local sportsman who played rugby and football with real skill, was no mean athlete, and a cricket medal winner who now doubles up as a sports writer.

My mole in the family tells me that he has now taken up an interest in horses, with his daughter as an accomplished rider, but his first attempt at sitting astride an equine friend when she was taking a deserved rest, ended in him coming a cropper.

All went well for at least ten seconds as he sat astride the 14.3 hands horse but it then decided it wasn’t used to the extra weight and effortlessly dumped him in the grass.

It was typical of his sporting determination that he had the bottle to get back on again and there were no broken bones – I just wish I had an action photo I could send to a local newspaper!

Morgans cause mayhem in local cricket

The father and son duo of Nigel and Matthew Morgan used to play cricket for Fishguard but changed their allegiance this season as young Matthew set out in the first division with Cresselly and has already caught the eye with his batting and bowling.

Nigel, meanwhile, opted to end his playing days at Haverfordwest, where he has settled in really well as a key seconds' player who has already made his debut and done well in the top echelon.

Ant transport difficulties about getting to matches seemed to evaporate when young Morgan passed his driving test but there was something of a hitch recently, after Matthew had shown his great talent with 89 not out for Cresselly’s first team. All went well until he went to put his kit in the car boot, but locked the door with the ignition key nestled neatly within! Even a couple of former reprobates in Cresselly couldn’t get into the car to open the boot and so the only thing Matthew could do was telephone Morgan senior, who had the spare key.

Now Nigel had played well in Haverfordwest and was just settling nicely into the birthday celebrations of skipper Richard Scriven when he received the SOS call from Cresselly – and to be fair to him he was soon on the way, with scarcely a grumble (at least, that’s what he told us!). He got Matthew’s car on the road and was back on his way to the party – so all was well that ended well in the Morgan cricketing household!
