Haverfordwest’s ‘Doc’ dishes

out tough medicine for Cresselly

Cresselly (140 for 8 & 125 for 9) lost to Haverfordwest (181 for 3 & 87 for 4)

A splendid knock of 100 not out in the first innings by opening bat Simon Holliday not only gave Haverfordwest a massive tea-time lead of 41 runs against Cresselly but effectively made sure that skipper Huw Scriven lifted the D.R.Morris Cup for 2011.

It lifted his team and clearly deflated the Cresselly side as he and Karl Rhead scored 70 runs in the last five overs of the innings, with Adam James blasting a six off the final ball of their allotted 20 overs to real twist the knife.

Cresselly seemed unable to raise the tempo after the interval, especially once danger man Simon Cole was superbly caught on the leg-side boundary by Adam James. Cole must have thought he had hit a six but James somehow flung himself to his left, took the ball in two hands and held on just inside the rope as his body thudded to the ground. If ever there was proof of the old adage that catches win matches then this was it!

It was one of three catches taken in the innings by James, alongside two neat stumpings from skipper Huw Scriven, whilst Clive Tucker showed all his off-spin wiles as he took 1 for 8 and 1 for 15 in his spells, and The Town fieldsmen held on to their catches.

Reasonable score

After electing to bat first, Cresselly lost openers Phil Williams and Andrew Harris cheaply but Simon Cole (40, including four fours and a six) and Ryan Lewis (five fours and a six in his 38), helped Cresselly to a respectable score of 14 for 8, aided by Adam Chandler (19). For Haverfordwest, Tucker kept a tight rein on early events whilst Adam James (3 for 41) and Dai Davies (3 for 39) were joined by Simon Holliday (1 for 33) as the wicket-takers.

Town recover from poor start

Haverfordwest also made a disappointing start as Jonathan Strawbridge and Danny Potter went early but Karl Rhead provided the perfect foil for Holliday with his five fours and a six in his 45 before he was bowled by Matthew Morgan. But Holliday showed his full array of shots as he struck ten fours and a six to reach his century in the last over from only 61 deliveries. It was as good an innings as has been seen in the DR Morris Cup for many years.

Slowish start

Cresselly were again unable to get off to a blistering start as Tucker was a key figure in their containment. Holliday joined the fray with his slow left-arm stuff and keeper Scriven superbly stumped Andrew Harris before taking his haul to 4 for 17 as Adam James added to his wonder catch of Cole by also pouching the dangerous Ryan Lewis cheaply. Dai Davies claimed another three wickets as Adam Chandler chipped in with 24 but a measure of how Cresselly struggled was the fact that it took them eight overs to wipe out the deficit.

James finishes off in style

Yet Cresselly are always bonny battlers and after a steady start The Town found themselves a little unsteady after Sion Jenkins, easily the pick of the Cresselly bowlers, removed Holliday for 18 to leave them on 59 for 4 runs. Funnier things have happened in cricket but Cresselly hopes of a come-back were stifled as Adam James joined Nathan Banner and promptly blitzed 22 runs in five deliveries, including three big sixes.

James’ 100% approach somehow typified the Haverfordwest performance and Banner applied the perfect coup de grace with a straight six to finish things off in style.

Huw Scriven received the Duggie Morris Cup from Graham Morris and Simon Holliday inevitable collected the man of the match award, donated by Winston & Beryl Griffiths, from Mrs Jane Morris.
