Gus Ellis Memorial Trophy
Nico and Jay scored goals that would have put a smile on granddad Gus’ face
Mickey Ellis X1 5 – West Dragons 4
The Gus Ellis Memorial Trophy was fittingly won by the Mickey Ellis X1 in a nine-goals bonanza played in glorious sunshine on the bottom pitch at the Bridge Meadow Stadium.
The charity football match was played in memory of former and extremely popular Welsh League goalkeeper Gus Ellis, who played for both Haverfordwest County and Pembroke Borough. After his football days he regularly turned out for Haverfordwest County Bowls Club and was proud to have represented Pembrokeshire on many occasions in the outdoors version.
Played in best of spirit
The game was played in the best of spirit with a good crowd on the touchline soaking up the rays.
Nico Algieri gave the Ellis X1 an early lead, scoring with a trademark close range striker’s finish. Dragons’ striker Scott Crawford equalised with a thumping strike. Jay Brockway hit the target to give his side the lead for the second time, but once again the Dragons levelled matters when Joe Jones nodded into the back of the net after Crawford’s goalbound effort crashed off the crossbar.
The Dragons stepped up a gear in the second half and were rewarded when Crawford struck twice to earn himself a hat-trick, and deservedly gave the Dragons a commanding 4-2 advantage.
Terrific late comeback
But the Ellis X1 was not prepared to throw in the towel and they mounted a terrific late comeback. Brockway and Algieri pulled goals back to square matters and late in the match Brockway scored the winner with a six-yard diving header that completed the 19-year-old’s hat-trick.
Shortly after the final whistle Gus Ellis’ daughter Jayne presented the Gus Ellis Memorial Trophy, kindly provided by G&G Builders, to Mickey Ellis X1 captain, Darren Ellis.
All proceeds raised from the charity game and post-match party held at the Labour Club in Haverfordwest will be donated to the Stroke Association Fund.
Shortly after the match Gus Ellis’ son Mickey said, “Dad would have thoroughly enjoyed watching this match. He was tremendous character and real family man who loved his sport. I would like to thank everyone who attended the game and who supported what will be an annual event.”
