County win well against SWCA
Pembroke County Cricket Club (209 all out) beat South Wales Cricket Association (186 all out)
Umpires: Dave Brandon & John Williams.
Scorers: John Laugharne (Pembroke CCC) and Craig Davies (SWCA).
Venue: The Racecourse, Haverfordwest.
Pembroke County Cricket Club’s talented young team played really well at The Racecourse as they fended off the challenge of a strong South Wales Cricket Association team before eventually winning by 23 runs as Llangwm’s Chris Inward was man of the match.
Inward turned the game on its head as he came in at No 7 and lashed 51 runs from only 35 balls, including five fours and two sixes – and then claimed 2 for 38 in an aggressive spell of fast bowling.
Evenly matched teams
Pembroke County were asked to bat first on a pitch that was superbly prepared by Mike Smith, Chip Jenkins, Martin and George Thomas and overcame the loss of losing opener Richard James from the very first ball of the innings to score a reasonable 209 all out in their allotted 45 overs.
The South Wales Cricket Association were always in with a shout, despite losing their opener Daniel Jones for a single, well caught by Peter Bradshaw off the bowling of Henry Durrant – but Durrant was joined by Adam James, Andrew Miller and Chris Inward in taking wickets at regular intervals as skipper Huw Scriven cannily alternated his bowlers and deservedly took the spoils.
Murray and Inward lead the charge
After the early demise of Richard James, caught off a first-ball full toss which caught a leading edge and flew to mid-on, there were decent cameos from Peter Bradshaw (16) and Andrew Miller (17) after Ben Field had also departed when he looked ready to accelerate – and Paul Murray showed what a classy batsman he has become with six fours in his 53 made from 78 balls before he was bowled by Jack Wild.
The tail ‘wagged’ as Matthew Davies (12), Henry Durrant (16 not out) and Huw Scriven (15) all scored quickly alongside Chris Inward before the innings ended on 209 with just two balls remaining.
Good fielding and bowling pay dividends
Gowerton all-rounder Jack Lyle led the SWCA response with an excellent 51 before he was well caught by Adam James in a three-wicket stint by Andrew Miller which hauled Pembroke County back in to contention. Joe Parkhouse (26) and Ben Edkins (25) also batted well for the visitors but Durrant (2 for 26) and Adam James (3 for 30) bowled really well to mop up the tail alongside Miller (3 for 34). James also pouched two good catches and Inward’s 2 for 38 was the icing on the cake for Pembroke County and nicely rounded off an excellent day where a good crowd enjoyed entertaining cricket and nicely set up the return match, at Llandyssul, on Sunday, 17th July.
County chairman David Loosmore said:
“I was delighted that the boys won so well in my first match as county chairman and it was a terrific all-round effort, led by Huw Scriven and maintained right to talented Narberth teenager Jordan Howell, who was a terrific 12th man.
“I would also like to thank the umpires, scorers, groundsmen who produced a marvellous strip, caterers and everyone at Haverfordwest Cricket Club who helped make it a memorable day.”
Tony Scourfield (Vice-chairman) added:
“The team played really well and as selectors we were very pleased with the way they played. It was a relatively inexperienced team and at tea I thought we might have been about 30 runs short, but they fielded superbly in support of some good bowling and it was a cracking win as reward for their battling qualities under inspirational skipper Huw Scriven. We showed today that we can play quality cricket in Pembrokeshire.”
