National Village Cup Competition:
Carew march into last 16
Timsbury (142 for 8)
lost to Carew (146 for 6)
Carew showed what bonny battlers they are on a cricket field as they made the long journey to Timsbury Cricket Club, near Bath, and came back with a deserved four wicket win that takes them into the last 16 of the competition for clubs all over England and Wales.
Their win was all the more meritorious because they had not played well at Saundersfoot on Saturday, had a six-hour trek on Sunday morning and knew that the opposition had once reached the final of this prestigious competition. But Carew were boosted by the fact that their team bus was filled with supporters and there were several car-loads who also made the journey to support Robbie Hicks and his team, which was boosted by the availability of Tim Hicks.
Tim is a match-winner
Hicks claimed 2 for 26 in eight overs and then came in with Carew struggling somewhat on 47 for 5 - and lashed seven boundaries in his top score of 45 not out as Rhys Davies helped him move very close to their target before getting out with the game more or less won.
Timsbury batted first and their key run-makers were Greg Passingham (58 not out) and Andrew Filer (34) but Carew fielded and caught really well in support of Scott Helmich, who picked up an excellent haul of 4 for 22 in nine overs, three of them maidens, alongside Rhys Davies (1 for 21 in nine overs) and Tim Hicks, whilst Ceri Brace and Tom Richards bowled useful spells without picking up any wickets.
Good start for Carew – and better finish!
Carew made a good start in response as Ian Sefton and Nick Scourfield put on 40 for the first wicket, with Scourfield contributing 13 and Sefton stroking six fours in his 37. Brian Hall departed for a duck, Robbie Hicks was dismissed for eight and Richards was adjudged lbw for 10 runs before Hicks batted really well and Rhys Davies blasted a big six and a four in his 19 before he was bowled. Haydn Shapcott joined Tim Hicks to see the winning runs hit and Carew’s reward for victory is a home tussle against Shipton under Wychwood, a top team from Gloucestershire, on July 10th.
Carew secretary Nick Scourfield told PembrokeshireSport.co.uk afterwards:
“We played really well and everyone gave 100% to keep Carew in the competition. It was a long haul but we received a very warm welcome from Timsbury and their supporters and we hope to give an even warmer welcome to Shipton when they visit us.”
