Amateur Boxing:

Pembroke show against Irish opponents a great success

Referee: John Phillips (Narberth).
Venue: Pater Hall (Pembroke Dock).

Keith Brennan (Tollerton) and Nico Morrison (Pembroke) with ref John Phillips. A knowledgeable crowd of boxing fans enjoyed ten bouts of the highest quality, organised by coach  Andy Edmundson, as Pembroke Amateur Boxing Club entertained Tollerton ABC from Ireland.
It was the first of what is hoped will be many meetings between the clubs and Pembroke’s head coach, Ralph Gammer, said,
“Tollerton have already become firm friends with us and we are eager to repay this excellent visit to us. Our first trip to Tollerton is planned for October.”

Undoubted highlight

The highlight of the evening was undoubtedly the final bout of an action-packed programme, when old favourite Nico Morrison took on Keith Brennan of Tollerton, who has had over sixty bouts, about twice as many as Morrison. But the local boxer soon showed his punching power and some solid body shots had Brennan on the canvas in round one.  Brennan showed his courage as he looked eager to get back into the action but Morrison put him on the floor again in round two and ref John Phillips sensibly stopped the contest. It was a superb display by Morrison and deservedly earned him the boxer of the night award.

The evening started with an exhibition bout between Adam Edmundson (Pembroke) and John Meally (Tollerton ABC) and it was generally agreed that it was one of the best bouts seen at the Pater Hall, Pembroke Dock, for a long time.
Talented youngster Jake Watson made his Pembroke debut and was just shaded out on a points decision by Liam Reynolds (Premier ABC) – before Liam Steele (St Clears) beat Shane Bolger (Tollerton) on points.
In another superb bout, Micky McDonagh  (Pembroke) showed why he is a Welsh champion by beating Tollerton’s Kieron Lewis on points, as did St Clears Jake Holland against his Irish opponent, Pierce Nash.

Senior bouts go well

In the senior contests, Dolfey Burns beat Steve Baker (Carmarthen) and thirty four year old Neil Phillips, who has been coached by Carl Keane, is 6’ 6” and 16 stone, had his debut bout and beat Dan Rees (Towy) with a second round stoppage.  It was a nice winning debut and leaves him with a 100% record since boxers must retire at 34!
Scott Keane (Pembroke) was shaded out by Callum Evans but battled well, to complete a splendid show, which had Chevron as main sponsors and was well supported by all the regular locals and by Dr Bury as the medical officer.
