Pembrokeshire Karting Championship Round One:
Cole takes an early lead
A clearly delighted Jason Cole took the chequered flag to win the first round of the 2011 Pembrokeshire Karting Championship at Carew Racetrack.
As the sun set, the action on-track lit up the evening. Cole, who was runner up in 2010, dominated the final, with Adam Jones coming a strong second whilst Jason’s brother, Matthew, took a fighting third.
Sam’s a shock omission as Cole steps in
One of the headlines of the event was the shock absence of reigning champion Sam Joseph from the final. Despite winning two heat races, and claiming the fastest lap of the event to secure top spot on the Smith & Jones Electrical Fastest Lap Challenge leader board, Joseph struggled in his semi final and just fell short of qualifying for the final.
This opened the door to rival Cole, who never looked in danger of losing his lead. Jones kept his nose clean throughout the race, while Matthew Cole recovered from a first lap spin to charge through the field to third. The battle for fourth was fierce, with Royston Badham, Jeff Pritchard and Richard Cowl all fighting tooth and nail, the watching crowd were treated to a classic encounter at the final corner, before Badham spun off in dramatic fashion.
Record attendance
The event boasted a record attendance for the series, including many new faces who, through strong performances staked claims to the Business Finance Wales ‘Rookie of the Year’ title.
