A delighted Kieran Rendell raises the trophy aloft.Hakin United’s talented young footballers completed the double of under 16 league and cup winners as they scored five goals without reply against Clarbeston Road.

But although the Vikings were worthy winners the final margin of victory did not reflect the part played by the Clarbie youngsters as they might have gone ahead in the first period and never once gave up trying in an entertaining tussle watched by a supportive and knowledgeable crowd that helped make the match a credit to junior football in our area.

Praise should also go to referee Phil Gale, who is now 61 years young but reffed the match with his usual mixture of quiet authority and calm, ably assisted by Tudor Walters and Dan Rees so that there wasn’t a single booking in a match which was always combative but played in the right spirit between two very good sides.

Hakin opened up the scoring after 11 minutes when talented goal-grabber Liam Fawcett drilled the ball home from inside the area – but Clarbie had several chances to level matters as Ryan Howells was denied by Liam Coe, who also saved well from an inswinging corner before Liam Maggs lost his marker but hooked the ball just wide of Coe’s net.

They were made to pay for missing these half chances because Fawcett popped up in a packed goalmouth to fire his and Hakin’s second goal home.

Aaron Tomkinson and Guto Harries tried hard to get Clarbie back into contention but Hakin grew stronger and Clarbie keeper Matthew Davies made several good saves in the second half – but was unable to stop Elliott Christofaro putting Ki Jones through for Hakin’s third goal.

Fawcett was denied a hat-trick when he had a header blocked on the line but Christofaro added a fourth from Paul Thompson’s lobbed cross – and Jack Beddis made it 5-0 with a left-foot rasper that curled inside Matthew Davies’s far post.  Skipper Kieran Rendell received the silverware, to the evident delight of coach Colin Fawcett and his assistants Paul Morgan and Paul Rendell – with League Sec quite rightly commending both teams on an excellent final.

The trophies were presented by Giuseppe Quinn and Martin Atkinson of Todaro’s Hairdressing.
