Win Howells member of yearCivil Service Bowls goes

from strength to strength

Pembrokeshire Civil Service Bowling Club celebrated another superb year with their annual presentation luncheon at the Fishguard bay Hotel, where their wonderful fund-raising efforts were again very much in evidence as they presented cheques for £1,250 each to two delighted local-based charities.

Delighted recipients of these cheques were Ken Brombley, the chairman of the Hope Hydrotherapy Unit in Neyland, plus Phil Burr from the West Wales Prostate Cancer Support Group. Ken spoke movingly of the tremendous voluntary work undertaken by his committee and emphasised what a real boost such a generous gesture by the civil service bowlers was to this year’s fund-raising efforts.

Warm presidential welcome

The 105 members, guests and friends were welcomed by Peter Howells, the president of the civil service bowlers, who was clearly delighted to welcome such a large congregation, which included current president of the Pembroke County Bowling Association, John Baggott and his wife Helen from Tenby, a large contingent from Pembroke Dock which included their chairman Les Davies and president Graham Bann, plus others from Neyland, Fishguard and Milford Haven, whose chairman Ronnie Grant was in attendance. Bill Carne took on the roll of MC and was clearly delighted to mention some of his old pals in attendance!

Peter also undertook the presentation of the cheques after hard-working secretary Mike Richards.

Richards had outlined all the good work undertaken by members to organise yet another tour, which had been very successful, and announced plans for the forthcoming season, where there would be friendly matches against clubs in the county and touring teams, as well as a tour to Barnstable. In addition, there had been other trips to Warners at Littlecote House for a ‘Turkey and Tinsel’ holiday, and to watch the musical ‘Mama Mia’. He was delighted to state that in the last five years they had raised over £12,000 for local good causes.

Win is a worthy winner

One of the highlights of the luncheon was undoubtedly the presentation of the club’s ‘Member of the Year’ award, where the popular recipient was Win Howells in recognition of all her yeoman work over many years. Mike Richards announced the choice and the response left no doubt that Win was an extremely popular winner to round off a thoroughly heart-warming luncheon!
